Richard Nelson
Richard Nelson is a composer and guitarist who is equally at home in both the jazz and contemporary concert music traditions. An active composer in both idioms as well as a professional jazz guitarist, Richard divides his time between the in-the-moment spontaneity of improvisational explorations and the more deliberately organized realms of composition. But rather than keeping these modalities separate, he fosters a healthy creative interplay between them. The Richard Nelson Imaginary Ensemble is his vehicle for concerts under his own leadership. Flexible in instrumentation, wide-ranging in genre, the group defies categorization with programs that range from fully-composed pieces and progressive jazz (and improvised music of all sorts) to straight-ahead jazz and music across the rock/pop/folk/blues spectrum

Thriving Jazz Orchestras: 2024
by Dan McClenaghan
Jazz orchestras may not make much sense financially in 2024. They are most likely unaffordable as touring units. Jazz Meets Folk, Folk Meets Jazz
by Jerome Wilson
This show looks at some of the many cross-pollinations between jazz and folk music. Richard Nelson / Aardvark Jazz Orchestra: Deep River
by Budd Kopman
The inspiration for jazz composition and improvisation can come from almost anywhere. For guitarist/composer Richard Nelson it was American roots music that he played with his then 12-year-old son who had developed an intense connection to the old tunes and players. The jazz suite Deep River is the result of experiencing this music with ...
Richard Nelson / Aardvark Jazz Orchestra: Deep River
by Jack Bowers
If the name of this new CD by guitarist Richard Nelson and Boston's intrepid Aardvark Jazz Orchestra sounds familiar, that's because it is the same as a spiritual of unknown origin that has been sung for perhaps hundreds of years in churches and other venues and recorded a number of times in films, once by the ...
