by Mark Corroto
June 7, 2015

Credit the new generation of jazz musicians for neither following tradition, nor coloring within the lines. Their music is not created within “the tradition." Unless, of course, that tradition includes maverick innovators like Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, and John Zorn, players that, at times, have been given the label of non-jazz. This new crop of players ...

by Glenn Astarita
June 3, 2015

Percussive Mechanics seems to be a fitting moniker for New York City- based saxophonist, composer Anna Webber's band, since the core building blocks of her intricately fabricated compositions are huddled within knotty flows and odd-metered rhythms. She doesn't operate within a narrow modus operandi, as each piece poses variable persuasions. A rising star in the avant-jazz ...

by Chris M. Slawecki
October 12, 2014

Like just about every historically great organ trio, these three expert musicians are strongly rooted in funk and jazz: Organ player Larry Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart both spent time smoking riffs for saxophonist Maceo Parker and guitarist {{John Scofield (not at the same time), while no less an authority than Jim Hall once called Peter ...

Larry Goldings/Peter Bernstein/Bill Stewart: Ramshackle Serenade

by Dan Bilawsky
June 16, 2014

Few artistic partnerships are as delightfully durable as the trio of organist Larry Goldings, guitarist Peter Bernstein, and drummer Bill Stewart. These men have often recorded under the moniker of the “Larry Goldings Trio" over the past two-plus decades, but this has never been a band to favor one player over another. Each man has always ...

Formazione di musicisti avventurosi, spinti da un insaziabile spirito di ricerca, seppur con prospettive e gradi differenti di intensità, che... sembra incappare, se non in un esercizio ...
