Joey Alexander
Born:
Born on the island of Bali in the city of Denpasar on June 25th, 2003, Joey Alexander first encountered a piano at the age of six, and was immediately able to pick out the melody of Thelonious Monk’s “Well, You Needn’t” and other jazz standards from his father’s record collection by ear. His father, an amateur musician, nurtured Joey’s gift for swing and improvisation by introducing him to classic jazz recordings and taking him to jam sessions with seasoned musicians in Bali and Jakarta. From there, his musical intuition flourished, as did his love of playing jazz. Learning by listening, Joey’s early influences include Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans and John Coltrane, and he has a special affinity for trumpet players including Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis

Monzell Dunlap
Born:
"The medium of music offers a beautiful range of storytelling to both the artist and listener through a collaborative spirit. The idea of creating sounds that move minds to travel; to remember; to appreciate and to aspire is what I love the most about what I do. Music is simply the medium… the art belongs to us all as we share our energies and explore our individual gifts to bring music to life." Born in Wadesboro, North Carolina on May 26, 1969 to Alonzo W. Dunlap, Jr. (Gospel recording artist) and Milveta Dunlap (visual artist and educator), Monzell first started playing saxophone at age 11 and from there developed his skills on the drums

Jamie Alexander Smith
Born:
Jamie started playing classical piano at age 6. Such a rigid musical environment quickly frustrated him and he started experimenting with improvising and composing his own music. He played a concert of his own piano compositions in school aged 11, and found that challenging himself not to rely on someone else to write the music for him was exciting and satisfying. Improvising is a key element of Jamie’s 'musical conception'. Knowing exactly what you’re going to play when you go on stage or hit the recording studio is, for him, uninticing. Nothing can compare with the exhilaration of making music up on the spot. Over the years Jamie has played in a variety of ensembles, from rock bands and jazz and funk ensembles to brass bands and an orchestra or two
