The Respect Sextet

Jazz pianist and composer Ben Dowling takes the long view when it comes to music and his artistic-life journey. Born in Arkansas, raised in New York, Vermont and Boston but settled in Los Angeles, Dowling smiles at his conflicting geographical history, "so I'm this Southern white boy who knows how to shovel snow, design synthesizers and play jazz. Go figure..."

The one thing this player does figure is how to push music to the next level. A native Detroiter, Cooke was originally a classically trained pianist (as a student of Mischa Kotler), who’s musical world forever changed after hearing Miles Davis's Kind of Blue for the first time. He then at age 10, discovered John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Bud Powell, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans, and developed a deep love for the Jazz idiom. Mark Simon couples jazz experience with a myriad of jazz influences to create a style of playing and writing that offers a mature outlook while pushing his work out to the edge. Simon, a Chicago-born Cub fan, has been playing jazz for over 30 years, starting somewhat inauspiciously by playing along with old Jazz At The Philharmonic records from his father’s massive and eclectic record collection, which ran the gamut from early jazz master Louis Armstrong to avant-garde Cecil Taylor.
