Early Life and Education: Born on November 18, 1942, in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic), Kotik displayed an early talent for music. He studied composition and flute at the Prague Conservatory and later attended the Prague Academy of Performing Arts, where he studied composition with Pavel Borkovec.

Career Beginnings: In the 1960s, Kotik became associated with the avant-garde music scene in Europe. He co-founded the QUaX Ensemble in 1961, which focused on performing experimental and contemporary works. He also collaborated with other composers and artists who were pushing the boundaries of traditional musical forms.
