Paula Shocron

Born:
Pianist, composer, performer and educator, born in Rosario, and based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She was trained as a classical pianist, from the age of 5, and later studied Composition at Escuela de Música de la Universidad de Rosario (National University). Her musical activity was always focused on improvisation, going deeply in jazz tradition at first, and then opening her language to a more personal (free) music, even extending to other artistic disciplines, (dance, theatre, poetry, etc). Today she has more than 20 records as a leader or co-leader. The most popular "Tensegridad" with SLD Trio, (Germán Lamonega on bass and Pablo Díaz on drums), was released on the well-known Swiss label hatOLOGY and had excellent international reviews

Henry Threadgill's Zooid, New No Business Releases & Christopher Parker

Two of the giants of the saxophone are featured in this episode of OMJ: Henry Threadgill and his longest-running band Zooid (he plays more with this band than others) and the late, great Sam Rivers from his archive of unrecorded music released by NoBusiness Records. Rivers leads one of his not-too-common guitar quartets. Also from NoBusiness ...

In North America, there are over 100 annual jazz festivals. Only a small number of these festivals are devoted to the avant-garde, adventurous, and freely improvised music.
