Protean Reality: Protean Reality
by John Sharpe
Alto saxophonist Chris Pitsiokos has been creating a buzz around NYC for a while now. After a series of releases on small independent imprints, Protean Reality constitutes one of the first opportunities for him to be heard by a wider audience. He appears in the eponymous triumvirate, alongside drummer Philipp Scholz and electric bassist Noah Punkt, ...
John Zorn: Flaga Plays Masada Book Two
by Luca Canini
Brad Mehldau Trio: Blues and Ballads
by Dan McClenaghan
Call Brad Mehldau's Blues and Ballads the pianist's “Every Man Set." There has been, from the beginning of Mehldau's career, a sense of the cerebral in his approach, with its classical music influences and his deep technical virtuosity. Throw the sometimes dense and erudite writing for selected liner notes (mostly earlier in his career) ...

Take Five With Roberta Piket
by AAJ Staff
About Roberta Piket Born in Queens, New York, Roberta inherited a passion for music from both her parents. Her father was the Austrian composer Frederick Piket, who made significant contributions to both the musical liturgy of Reform Judaism and the concert hall with works performed by the New York Philharmonic under conductor Dimitri Metropolis. From her ...
William Parker, Lisa Sokolov, Cooper-Moore: Stan's Hat Flapping in the Wind
by Alberto Bazzurro
Pat Metheny: The Unity Sessions
by Mario Calvitti
Naftule's Dream: Blood
by Dan McClenaghan
Emerging from the ranks of the Boston area's Shirim Klezmer Orchestra, Naftule's Dream began with John Zorn's Tzadik Records when the label was young, offering up on the imprint Search for the Golden Dreydl (1997), Smash, Clap! (1998) and Job (2001). One thing about a large scale klezemer band--it offers up plenty of opportunity for madcap ...
Daniel Bennett Group: Sinking Houseboat Confusion
by Mark Sullivan
After a year of extensive touring to support last years' The Mystery at Clown Castle (Manhattan Daylight Media, 2015) the Daniel Bennett Group returns with a fresh eclectic musical blend they describe as Surf Rock + Avant-Pop + Modern Jazz. All that touring seems to have inspired a stripped-down approach, both stylistically and in the instrumentation. ...
