Mike Baggetta

Born:

Guitarist Mike Baggetta is one of his generation’s most original jazz improvisors and composers. It has been said that his performances are "totally compelling" (Jazz Journal - UK), "his melodic sense is truly beautiful" (Jazzreview.com) and that "each piece he performs creates new worlds of possibilities" (The Hartford Courant). Mike Baggetta recently received an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award for his compositional talent, and has also released the second album of his works for the Mike Baggetta Quartet, Source Material, on the Fresh Sound New Talent label. Whit Dickey, Asher Gamedze, Quin Kirchner, Icepick and More

Read "Whit Dickey, Asher Gamedze, Quin Kirchner, Icepick and More" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

Three albums by drummers highlight this episode. South Africa's Asher Gamedze's Dialectic Soul brings to light the freer, more avant side of contemporary South African jazz (perhaps in a way that the revered Louis Moholo Moholo did over fifty years ago), while drummer Quin Kirchner's latest delves into various rhythms and tributes to favorite musicians. Tying ...

There are three featured albums this week... Bartosz Hadala moved from New York City to Toronto in 2010 and began writing music for his next album. Read "Mark F. Turner's Best Releases of 2016" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

Another year of outstanding releases which not only unveiled new artists but also fresh material from those I've admired over many years. Mike Baggetta: Spectre

Read "Spectre" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

Mike Baggetta has produced a number of quality recordings over the years yet Spectre may be his most compelling project to date. The guitarist delves into some “live" sound processing which include an array of delicate textures, sampling and loops undoubtedly influenced by ECM recording artist David Torn who mastered this release. Though ...

Mike Baggetta Quartet: Source Material

Read "Source Material" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

Guitarist Mike Baggetta's versatility has been in the thick of New York's creative music scene, whether performing with Tom Harrell or front-lining projects like Bridges (MabnotesMusic, 2011), a duo recording with trumpeter Kris Tiner. Source Material is Baggetta's follow up to 2009's Small Spaces (Fresh Sound), with a working quartet that includes robust sax work from ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
