Michael Wollny

Born:

Michael Wollny, born in 1978 in Schweinfurt, internationally successful jazz pianist, music inventor, unconventional thinker, popular figure. Nobody plays piano like him. His trademark: the unpredictable, the quest for the never-before-heard, the courage to devote himself to the moment, to make the unforeseen sound self-evident. His desire to keep reinventing himself, both in terms of sound and composition; that is what makes him a “consummate piano maestro” (FAZ) and “the biggest (jazz) musician personality that Germany has produced since Albert Mangelsdorff” (Hamburger Abendblatt).

Wollny - Parisien - Lefebvre - Lillinger: XXXX

Read "XXXX" reviewed by Phillip Woolever

This unique group effort by a progressive team of virtuoso improvisers doesn't always hit the mark of inspired mastery, but the project certainly expands such possibilities. The album is culled from a four-night stand at Berlin's well-known A-Trane club which produced around eight hours of recorded material. The intriguing, unpredictable package presented here clocks in at ...

Read "Returned to Forever: The Chick Corea's Songbook, Part 1" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

We celebrate the legacy of the late Chick Corea with his countless recordings as a leader or sideman, a body of compositions that have already expanded the jazz canon and will continue to do so in the coming years. In this first part of the programme we'll focus in particular on his “Spanish Heart" and his ...

As 2019 passes into 2020 it is a time to look back at some of the best records from the previous year. 2019 saw some very good jazz releases many of which were featured on the Crazeology Radio Show and it was really hard to decide a top ten. After many hours of deliberating with records ...

4 Wheel Drive: 4 Wheel Drive

Read "4 Wheel Drive" reviewed by Geno Thackara

It may not quite be the loud and fast thrill-ride one might guess from the title, but that doesn't mean it lacks a few fun twists and turns. Here we have four world-class players who can (and sometimes do) carry a whole performance on their own, agreeing to mesh as equals and—more importantly—staying generous and supportive ...

4 Wheel Drive: 4 Wheel Drive

Read "4 Wheel Drive" reviewed by Phillip Woolever

Sometimes it's not so much who's doing the playing as how well they play together. Just as some bands seem to perform beyond their individual skill sets, there have been heavily heralded, much hyped “super groups" that amounted to almost nothing of substance. In the case of 4 Wheel Drive, a quartet consisting of ...

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
