Manny Oquendo

Manny Oquendo - timbales, latin percussionist Latin Bandleader Manny Oquendo, is a veteran of the days when Latin bands crowded into a studio to polish off a recording in an all-night session. Oquendo’s musical education consisted of the old-school, "just play" approach, and he was in the right place to learn. He grew up on Kelly Street in the Bronx, New York, not far from the great Cuban tres player, Arsenio Rodriguez and famed pianist Noro Morales. And a lot of kids who’d later make their names in Latin music-such as Joe Cuba, and the Palmieri brothers, One floor down from the Oquendo apartment was the Almacenes Hernandez record shop

Wayne Wallace Latin Jazz Quintet: Intercambio

Read "Intercambio" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Read "Salsa de la Bahia vol 2, Hoy Y Ayer" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

[ Editor's Note: The following interview is reprinted from George Colligan's blog, Jazztruth]When I was a young middle school trumpet player in Columbia, MD, Alex Norris was kind of a musical legend around Howard County. Not only was he arguably the best trumpeter in the state, but he could play funk electric bass, and ...

Wayne Wallace Latin Jazz Quintet: Bien Bien!

Read "Bien Bien!" reviewed by Jeff Dayton-Johnson

With ¡Bien Bien!, as with previous releases, trombonist Wayne Wallace and his group display a very subtle kind of mastery. The elements of the combo's excellence are impressive enough. First, Wallace plays his instrument as beautifully as the trombone all-stars in Manny Oquendo's classic Conjunto Libre--or indeed the great Julian Priester, who sits in on a ...

Manny Oquendo & Libre: Ahora

Read "Ahora" reviewed by Dave Hughes

First of all, let me admit a bias. As a trombonist, there are few sounds more beautiful to my ears than an ensemble of trombones. Combine this with another passion, the seductive throbbing of cuban percussion, and you have a combination that's tough to beat. Manny Oquendo and Libre live up to this potential on their ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
