Jason Moran: All Rise: A Joyful Elegy for Fats Waller

Read "All Rise: A Joyful Elegy for Fats Waller" reviewed by Mark F. Turner

Jason Moran is an artist who is not afraid to look back while constantly pressing forward. The 2010 MacArthur Fellow is a leading jazz pianist with moments of kinetic energy, agility, and sensitivity, the likes of his one-time teacher, the great Jaki Byard. Whether performing with varied ensembles and musicians, bringing new perspectives as the Artistic ...

Zara McFarlane: If You Knew Her

Read "If You Knew Her" reviewed by Phil Barnes

In the current short term, fast buck, major label A&R climate Brownswood stand out like a beacon for the way that they back and develop their artists. Perhaps the different ethos comes from the top, Gilles Peterson is the label boss after all, but in any event less sensitive hands might not have allowed a talent ...

Leron Thomas: Zen-Mode Humor

Read "Leron Thomas: Zen-Mode Humor" reviewed by DanMichael Reyes

The chances of four people conducting a Google search on Leron Thomas that result in all four of them to make the same conclusion about the trumpeter is low. While certain facts--like his time at High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (PVA) in Houston and The New School in New York--will remain true, arguments ...

His records, self-produced and often underproduced, are hard to sum up, and that's the point. They're perverse and searching and sketchy and sometimes quite lovely: straight-ahead jazz— he is a serious improviser, rhythmically strong and controlled ...

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
