I was born in Russia (to poor but honest parents), and started piano lessons at the age of 5 (and started composing shortly afterwards). I attended a fairly serious Russian music school, learning piano, theory, composition, and a whole lot of other things, until my family immigrated to the US. After immigrating to Minnesota, I continued taking piano lessons at the local music school, playing exclusively classical music (mostly Chopin), but decided not to pursue music as a profession (I majored in engineering instead, with a minor in math). I discovered ragtime only about 3 years ago, after seeing a San Antonio Ragtime Society flyer in a local health-food store (another testament to the importance of health food)
