Kellye Gray
Born:
Kellye Gray is cool. Not Miles Davis cool, though certainly she has some elements of that. It’s more like your best friend kind of cool. The kind of cool that makes you feel at ease. You want to shoot the breeze with her because she’s engaging, and you’ll laugh your ass off. Kellye Gray is also a jazz singer. A good one at that, which is no small feat considering her predecessors. Raised on R&B and the Motown sound, Gray was turned on to jazz by her parents. First it was singers like Sarah Vaughn and Chris Connor. Then it was instrumental monsters like Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, The Modern Jazz Quartet and John Coltrane

I leave you in the gentle ...

Kellye Gray: Rendering
by Mark Christian Miller
Kellye Gray has reissued her 1989 debut recording Standards in Gray in a double disc package with her current release, titled Rendering. It isn't immediately obvious that there are two CDs in the package and I was later informed that the earlier disc is tucked into the side pocket--what a nice surprise. It takes ...

by C. Michael Bailey
This year marks my 20th contributing to AAJ. Twenty years ago, I was 38 years old looking for an outlet for my music writing that had somehow avoided me until I came across an opportunity disguised as a call for articles from one Michael Ricci in jny: Philadelphia. I emailed my review of Art Pepper's San ...
