Jazz Passengers: Reunited
by Mark Corroto
Don't mistake the music made by The Jazz Passengers as merely camp or burlesque send-ups. Sure, trombonist Curtis Fowlkes dons the persona of the infamous “Peaches," from the duo Peaches and Herb, for the 1970's hit, “Reunited." The irony dissolves underneath Roy Nathanson and Fowlkes' spoken/sung duet with Sam Bardfeld's pizzicato violin and Marc Ribot's now-patented ...
The Jazz Passengers: Reunited
by Troy Collins
Reunions have become a requisite aspect of the music business, though the end results can vary in quality. Reunited, The Jazz Passengers first recording in twelve years, is a stellar example of this phenomenon. Picking up where they left off, this vivacious studio session juxtaposes mellifluous crooning, adventurous post-bop and stylistic eclecticism with irrepressible charm and ...
Hilary Kole: You Are There
by Larry Taylor
With her crystal clear voice and precise phrasing, singer Hilary Kole pulls off the delightful and unique You Are There. This is one of a kind, because eleven different top-of-the-line piano accompanists join her, with two appearing twice. You Are There's 13 songs are all ballads, sung passionately, simply, and with no frills. According ...
Hank Jones - Oliver Jones: Pleased to Meet You
by AAJ Italy Staff
Roberto Fonseca: Akokan
by Raul d'Gama Rose
In his follow-up to 2007's Zamazu (Enja/Justin Time), Cuban piano master, Roberto Fonseca deepens his journey into his quasi-mystical musical search. Like the mythical Gilgamesh, the pianist has embarked on a seemingly endless journey, a leap of faith into the musical unknown, to find the tonal center of pain and joy, heartache and ecstasy--and yes, in ...
David Murray and The Gwo Ka Masters: The Devil Tried to Kill Me
by AAJ Italy Staff
