Sbatax: Spires

Read "Spires" reviewed by John Sharpe

On their third album the Swiss-French pairing of saxophonist Bertrand Denzler and drummer Antonin Gerbal dishes up a double helping of fiery free jazz. While Denzler revels in the exquisitely sparse detail of outfits such as the electro-acoustic Trio Sowari, he also has a track record in weightier realms--witness his contributions to Neuköllner Modelle with veteran ...

East Axis, Sebastiano Dessanay, Christoph Irniger & Andrew Cyrille

Read "East Axis, Sebastiano Dessanay, Christoph Irniger & Andrew Cyrille" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

This episode gets down to the bass-ics. I've loaded up this show with tracks that feature some terrific bassists, like Kevin Ray with East Axis and 10-32 K, Italy's Sebastiano Dessanay, Billy Mohler, Joel Grip with Ouat, John Edwards from England, Argentina's Maximiliano Kirszner, and of course, William Parker. There are more. Also on the bill, ...

Antonin Gerbal

Drummer, improviser and composer based in Paris. Active in bands like [Ahmed] with Pat Thomas, Seymour Wright and Joel Grip ; [Ism] with Pat Thomas and Joel Grip ; Sbatax with Bertrand Denzler ; large ensembles like Umlaut Big Band or ONCEIM. As an eclectic musician, Antonin Gerbal has developed a singular approach to rhythms and sound - questioning the unity of the drums in the first swing orchestras, bebop, free jazz and in the fields of contemporary improvised, composed and experimental musics. He has collaborated with Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Éliane Radigue, Peter Ablinger, Evan Parker, John Tilbury, Stephen O’Malley, Jim O'Rourke, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Seijiro Murayama or Axel Dörner.

Elastic Bricks: Oùat

Read "Oùat" reviewed by Mark Corroto

The Berlin-based piano trio Oùat releases their first album with the seemingly paradoxical title Elastic Bricks. If you listen closely, there is nothing incongruent nor oxymoronic about the music. The studio recording from 2021 by pianist Simon Sieger, bassist Joel Grip, and drummer Michael Griener is an all acoustic instrumental affair with a twist. The vinyl ...

Moers Festival Interviews: Pat Thomas

Read "Moers Festival Interviews: Pat Thomas" reviewed by Martin Longley

In 2020, the Moers Festival in Germany presented one of the first full post-lockdown events, with its performers physically in place, and its four-day programme resolutely running in the accustomed Eventhalle venue. There was a stage at each end of this cavernous space, with the French-German Arte television crew filming for broadcast on its channel, as ...
