Born and raised in Kailua, Hawaii, James LaReaux discovered his passion for jazz piano at age 14. While traditional music teachers encouraged him to learn the classical approach to fundamental lessons, he gravitated to jazz rhythm and developed his own learning methods. By age 16, he had taught himself music theory and started developing its application for his own signature style of jazz piano.
