Mark Sullivan's Favorite Jazz Albums of 2024

Read "Mark Sullivan's Favorite Jazz Albums of 2024" reviewed by Mark Sullivan

This was an exceptional year for jazz albums of all sorts, as well as jazz-adjacent experimental music. The supply of previously unreleased live recordings seemed nearly inexhaustible! People discovered tapes right and left, presenting exceptional performances in good to excellent recording quality. My lists could easily have been much longer. Lists are unranked. ...

Jakob Bro, Lee Konitz, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran, Thomas Morgan, Andrew Cyrille: Taking Turns

Read "Taking Turns" reviewed by Neil Duggan

Despite being recorded a decade ago, this album from Danish guitarist Jakob Bro sounds as fresh and contemporary as any 2024 release. Taking Turns was originally recorded in New York in 2014; the album release was delayed by ECM Records, who initially preferred to highlight Bro's trio work. The postponement proves fortuitous, as Bro's melodic compositions ...

Read "Neil Duggan's Best Jazz Albums Of 2024" reviewed by Neil Duggan

Song to an Old Friend

Featuring the music of Jakob Bro
Duration: 05:56

All About Jazz writer Robert Middleton has published a thoroughly researched and affectionate article entitled Saxophone Meets Guitar: The Dynamic Duo of Jazz In addition to his playlist of 463 inspiring songs from the genre, consider also "Song to an Old Friend" by Danish guitarist Jakob Bro with legendary tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano. This piece takes down the tempo to "ECM label chill," allowing the listener to appreciate how complementary the sounds of these two instruments can be. Sax vibrato begets guitar with chorus; sax grit from the throat is matched with guitar distortion from an effects box. With the audio released on a tribute recording to drummer Paul Motian called Once Around the Room, this video captures the performers' subtle chemistry in the studio.

This older program, from November 2021, is eclectic enough to include saxophonists Sarah Manning and Kevin Sun, guitarists Marc Ribot and Jakob Bro, and singers Dave Frishberg and Sarah Vaughan. Please excuse the slight glitches at the beginning. Playlist Henry Threadgill Sextett “I Can't Wait Till I Get Home" from The Complete Novus & ...

Jake Baldwin, Zacc Harris, Pete Henning: Boundaries

Read "Boundaries" reviewed by Kyle Simpler

Some music defies definition. If it fits into a recognizable style, it is not that difficult to describe. When artists step outside traditional boundaries to create a different sound, it frequently becomes one of those “you just have to hear it" moments. Such is the case with Boundaries, the debut release from the trio of trumpeter ...
