The masters highlight this edition of OMJ: composer Henry Threadgill leading an ensemble of six guitarists and two pianists through his unique intervallic system on the new Listen Ship, and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith in elevated company of guitarist Jakob Bro & drummer Marcus Gilmore on Murasaki, a very strong album. Jakob Bro: Live at The Village Vanguard
by Fran Kursztejn
Legendary guitarist Jakob Bro revitalized the pensive romanticism of the ECM Records sound with last year's Taking Turns, and continues his crusade in Live at the Village Vanguard. His strategy is simple: a diverse cast, both in style and generation, slavishly dedicated to a dynamic trajectory, like a viscous alloy rushing violent in an aged riverbed. ...

Luke Stewart, Silvia Bolognesi & Alexander Hawkins
by Maurice Hogue
I confess to having a thing about basses, particularly of the acoustic kind, so I got all excited when the latest Luke Stewart album rolled in. About to do a gig with his Remembrance Quintet, he change course and combined musicians from his Silt Trio and the Quintet for a live gig which was recorded with ...
Hvalfugl: Bag Vore Øjne Strømmer Drømme Sagte Forbi
by Jakob Baekgaard
An impossible creature flies across the sky; a whale-bird. It has the heaviness and mythic stature of a whale and the lightness of a bird in slow flight. It is both grounded and free. This creature does not exist and yet it does exist in music. Since 2016, the Danish trio, Hvalfugl (Whale-bird), has created its ...
