James Weidman: Three Worlds
by Donald Elfman
Three Worlds is the product of a thoughtful musical soul. Pianist James Weidman is well-versed in the traditional and modern jazz vocabulary and has found ways of deftly incorporating what's he's heard into his playing and composing. And here he adds color to his pianistics with melodica and the exotic xaphoon, a single-reed keyless bamboo wind ...
Michael Pinto: Prologue
by Mark F. Turner
Though influenced by the great Milt Jackson, vibraphonist Mike Pinto has his own lofty ideas about the instrument as shown on this ambitious debut. His impressive mallet scissoring has been heard with notable drummers Billy Hart and Nasheet Waits as well as performances/recordings with another rising star, saxophonist Logan Richardson. Pinto and Richardson, ...

Sara Serpa: Praia
by Phil DiPietro
Sara Serpa is a vocalist wielding an instrument as favorably unadorned and pure as any in jazz. She's the freshest vocalist on the scene at the moment, not just because she's new to it at age 28. It's certainly not because of the way she delivers a lyric, since there usually aren't any. Being from Portugal ...
Greg Osby: 9 Levels
by Mark F. Turner
After ending a sixteen year tenure with Blue Note Records, leaving his signature as one of the most forward thinking, outspoken, and at times misunderstood artists in contemporary jazz, saxophonist/composer Greg Osby returns with 9 Levels, the first release on his new Inner Circle Music label. The music which is based upon Osby's ...
