Tumi Árnason is an Icelandic saxophonist, improviser & composer influenced by and drawing from the creative transcendence and open-mindedness of the avant garde, free jazz and improvised music. His 2019 record, ALLT ER ÓMÆLIÐ, was the first duo release from saxophonist Tumi Árnason and drummer Magnús Trygvason Eliassen (ADHD). The record, inspired by Greek proto-philosopher Anaximanders’ ideas about conceptual abstraction, contains a set of free improvisations and open compositions revolving around the idea of the indefinite; the nature of improvisation, structures that exist but are only hinted at, the space between sounds. Tumi Árnason's latest release is Hlýnun (2021), a piece that addresses our current existential threat, the climate crisis, through free jazz and experimental improvisation
Ingi Bjarni Skúlason is a pianist/composer of considerable distinction and finesse, creatively seeking to shun boundaries in style or genre. Across our forever-united European musical landscape, he builds collaborations that challenge and excite, including projects with friends and colleagues in the Scandinavian countries he has lived in and whose open, artistic culture is closely entwined with that of his Icelandic homeland. This singular musician’s focus produces original works which, while informed by jazz tradition, Nordic folksong and electronica, rise up from a wellspring of meticulously-shaped imaginings – ideas inspired by relentlessly searching improvisation, as well as the people he interacts with in daily life, and also the wonders of the natural environment. Embracing the infinitely explorable world of the classic jazz piano trio, Skúlason’s first two major albums – Skarkali (2015) and Fundur (2018) – invited listeners into a realm of spacial freedom and vibrant expression; and latest recording Tenging expands horizons further with a sparkling quintet (trumpet, guitar, piano, bass and drums) which weaves even greater textures and possibilities into his increasing musical vision. Intuition is uppermost in the pianist’s quest: “The excitement is in not really knowing! So rather than intentionally sitting down to compose, I investigate ideas and improvise at length
MARÍNA & MIKAEL is an Amsterdam based vocal/guitar duet. Both coming from Iceland and studying in Amsterdam, they decided to jam and from there, there was no turning back; They've been playing together since December 2014. In January 2016 they started working on a project. The idea was to arrange jazz standards acoustically with the idea of them sounding like the duet had written them themselves. Mikael did most of the arranging while Marína wrote new lyrics for each song, in Icelandic. Together they settled on details and ended up with 8 ready-to-play arranged songs. Each song got a fresh perspective, a new story and a new sound
