Freddie King

“The Texas Canmonball” Freddie King was one of the kingpins of modern blues guitar. Along with Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, and Magic Sam, King spearheaded Chicago's modern blues movement in the early '60s and helped set the stage for the blues-rock boom of the late '60s. His influence helped preserve a legacy characterized by searing, aggressive guitar solos and the welding of blues and rock into one cohesive sound. Although Freddie King was born and raised in Texas, he matured as a musician in Chicago. His guitar style combined country and urban influences. As a child, King grew up on the music of such legendary country blues guitarists as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lightnin' Hopkins, and Arthur "Big Boy"Crudup
Steve Khan: A Rich Discography and A Priceless Left Hand

The life and times of guitarist extraordinaire Steve Khan stretch through a high volume of evolving chapters that fuse together like the passages of a finely crafted arrangement. An expansive conversation with Khan touched on a variety of memories. Still, this is perhaps the Reader's Digest version of the seventy-three years old musician and composer's remarkable ...
John Mayall: In The Pocket at 84

For the past five and a half decades, John Mayall has written scores of both relevant and joyous music. It should come as no surprise that at the tender age of 84 he continues to do so. It soothingly, and ingeniously, seems to flow out of him like a calm, yet telling, river. Many ...

The Seth Yacovone Blues Trio Red Square Burlington, VT July 16, 2017 On this warm, breezy summer evening outside Burlington Vermont's Red Square, The Seth Yacovone Blues Trio's first of three sets was sufficiently moving and diverse to satisfy like a concert complete unto itself. Yet the threesome's performance manifest ...
Blues Deluxe: Colin James, Matthew Curry and Johnny Nicholas

The cultural fragmentation of the last two decades or so has resulted in such a multiplicity of niche categories that the blues community only benefits by its long-term standing of loyalty to the genre. Rather than suffer foolish players gladly or thoughtlessly reward the mediocre results of their efforts, these devoted and inveterate music-lovers deeply relish ...

Claude Nobs: We All Came Out To Montreux...

Montreux Jazz Festival is fifty. It's a significant milestone and cause for celebration. No doubt there will be an added festive element to this year's edition of the festival, founded by Claude Nobs--along with pianist Géo Voumard and writer René Langel--in 1967. Yet for many, the celebrations will be tinged with sadness due to the absence ...
Oz Noy: The Twisted Wizardry Of Oz

Any blues played by Oz Noy would have to be a little twisted. Drawing on influences ranging from the classic jazz guitarists of yesteryear to the trailblazers of more recent vintage, Noy's instantly recognizable voice is also heavily influenced by blues and heavy metal guitarists. Two and a half years have passed since Twisted ...
Tedeschi Trucks Band at Red Rocks

Tedeschi Trucks Band Red Rocks Denver, CO July 25, 2014 Never underestimate the power of a cover. A cleverly selected and well executed cover tune can be like a firecracker with a too-short fuse, a shot of vodka when you expected water, a lightning bolt out of a clear, blue sky. ...
