ETHEL

Established in New York City in 1998, the string quartet ETHEL sets the contemporary concert standard:  “indefatigable and eclectic” (The New York Times), “vital and brilliant” (The New Yorker). Composer performers—Ralph Farris (viola), Kip Jones (violin), Dorothy Lawson (cello), and Corin Lee (violin)—fuse  uptown panache with downtown genre mashup. ETHEL has performed across the United States and  worldwide; released 9 feature albums; guested on 40+ recordings; won a GRAMMY® with jazz legend Kurt  Elling; and toured with Todd Rundgren & Joe Jackson. ETHEL champions the art and music of today,  forging human connections across sound and style.

Laurence Hobgood: Tesseterra

Read "Tesseterra" reviewed by Roger Farbey

"Jazz with strings" is a phrase that sometimes invokes a heart-sink feeling amongst reviewers. Happily this is not one of those occasions. Laurence Hobgood has released a half dozen records under his own name but many more for vocalist Kurt Elling with whom he's been musical director, co-producer and accompanist for over twenty years. During that ...

Don Byron / Aruán Ortiz: Random Dances And (A)Tonalities

Read "Random Dances And (A)Tonalities" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

Two highly accomplished artists--one long-established, the other solidifying his legacy--are brought together on Random Dances And (A)Tonalities. This duo outing features clarinetist and saxophonist Don Byron and pianist Aruán Ortiz. The two gifted composers have been playing together, at Ortiz's initial request, since 2014 but in larger ensembles. In late 2017 Byron and Ortiz met in ...

Hafez Modirzadeh: In Convergence Liberation

Read "In Convergence Liberation" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

Multi-reed player and composer Hafez Modirzadeh has created a sweeping global experience with In Convergence Liberation; a further examination of the cross-cultural influences explored on Post-Chromodal Out (PI Recordings, 2012). The earlier recording incorporated elements of multi-regional modalism and chromatics, and these compositional techniques are made even more textural with a significantly deeper line up of ...

Hafez Modirzadeh: In Convergence Liberation

Read "In Convergence Liberation" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

Multi-instrumentalist, composer and ethnomusicologist Hafez Modirzadeh's In Convergence Liberation on the intrepid Pi Recordings label is an ambitious work, and one at which he admirably succeeds. The album is a single, unified entity made up of five distinct but interlaced suites that explore a primal spirituality and express it in timeless poetry. Deftly merging ...

Kurt Elling: Dedicated To You

Read "Dedicated To You" reviewed by A. Lienhard

Dedicated To You is a tribute to one of the most beloved and beautiful recordings in jazz, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. On that six song album, John Coltrane introduces a relatively unknown singer named Johnny Hartman. The two musicians had only just met one another, however in a mere three hours, they produce a classic. ...

John King: Allsteel

Read "Allsteel" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff
