Ernie Henry was an American jazz saxophonist. Henry played in the late 1940s with Tadd Dameron (1947), Fats Navarro, Charlie Ventura, Max Roach, and Dizzy Gillespie (1948–49). From 1950 to 1952 he played in the band of Illinois Jacquet. Bévort 3: Live 2020-2021

Read "Live 2020-2021" reviewed by Ian Patterson

Twenty-five years on from her debut, A Live (Music Mecca, 1997), recorded at Copenhagen's Jazzhaus, Danish saxophonist Pernille Bévort returns with another live outing. Live is only her second live recording as leader in that time, though 2021 did see the archival releases, in EP format, of a quartet performance from 1999 and another of Bévort ...

John Coltrane: An Alternative Top Ten Albums

Read "John Coltrane: An Alternative Top Ten Albums" reviewed by Chris May

Miles Davis once said that you could recite the history of jazz in just four words: Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker. To that you need to add two more: John Coltrane. A giant during his lifetime, Coltrane continues to shape jazz and inspire musicians decades after he passed. No other player has come remotely close to eclipsing ...

Frank Kimbrough: Monk's Dreams: The Complete Compositions of Thelonious Sphere Monk

Read "Monk's Dreams: The Complete Compositions of Thelonious Sphere Monk" reviewed by Victor L. Schermer

Thelonious Monk, though controversial in his time, was a brilliant, innovative pianist and composer with a unique way of conceiving the music that was yet remarkably simpatico with standard forms. Many of his compositions (they are much more than “tunes," though I'll use that word here as shorthand) have become a regular part of the jazz ...

Fats Navarro and Tadd Dameron – The Complete Blue Note and Capitol Recordings

Read "Fats Navarro and Tadd Dameron – The Complete Blue Note and Capitol Recordings" reviewed by Marc Davis

There aren't many jazz records I'd consider essential. This is one. Granted, Fats Navarro isn't in the pantheon of jazz trumpeters. For starters, he didn't live long enough. He died in 1950 at age 26, so his discography is short. For another, Navarro's brief career overlapped that of trumpet legend Dizzy Gillespie, and came ...

Dizzy Gillespie: Four Classic Albums

Read "Four Classic Albums" reviewed by David Rickert

Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was one of the few jazz musicians equally adept (and influential) in small groups and fronting big bands. After the bebop heyday, he spent the fifties equally divided between smaller groups and a larger orchestra. His days as a bebop pioneer and a developer of Afro-Cuban music behind him, he now had a ...

The Emergence of Jimmy Lyons

Read "The Emergence of Jimmy Lyons" reviewed by Robert Levin

[Editor's Note: From Jazz & Pop Magazine, 1970] Since 1960, when he began working with Cecil Taylor, alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons has been developing from a somewhat diffident musician into one of the more potent voices in the New Music. In recent recordings and appearances with Taylor, Jimmy has been playing with a glowing ...
