Eberhard Weber: Rarum XVIII: Selected Recordings

by Michael P. Gladstone
April 2, 2004

After checking my LP collection, I learn that I have seven Eberhard Weber albums from 1973 through 1980. I'm pretty sure that Colours of Chloë was the very first ECM album that I purchased, and it was simply on an aesthetic basis. The album was a complete tabula rasa with clean yet austere packaging, unknown musicians ...

Jack DeJohnette: Rarum XII: Selected Recordings

Jack DeJohnette could be described as an “architectural” drummer: he plays as if unfolding a master plan, the long corridors of his backbeat leading on all sides to little rooms containing counter-rhythms, shifting accents, and dynamic changes. Abercrombie, Keith Jarrett, and Jan Garbarek are probably the ...

March 9, 2004

ECM's Rarum series, where artists choose their own peak recordings, has resulted in an occasionally refreshing departure from a conventional “Greatest Hits" package. Yet this Metheny retrospective seems only minutely different from a “hits" package, though it is a vast improvement over Works, the label's previous anthology of popular Metheny. Here is a 70 ...

John Surman: Rarum XIII: Selected Recordings

Read "Rarum XIII: Selected Recordings" reviewed by Norman Weinstein

March 7, 2004

Here is a much needed career retrospective of John Surman, arguably the most impressive baritone saxophonist in the post-Mulligan era. ECM continues to treat its stars honorably by having them choose their own high points from their back catalog, and no one can fault Surman for being wildly eclectic. The problem is: the stellar horn man ...
