Kirk Knuffke, Charles Lloyd, FIDOqrtet and More

Read "Kirk Knuffke, Charles Lloyd, FIDOqrtet and More" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

This episode has several excellent contemporary trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn players scattered throughout the playlist: players like Brian Groder (new recording Luminous Arcs ), Dan Rosenboom, Kirk Knuffke, Nate Wooley (with Harris Eisenstadt), Ron Horton and Rob Mazurek (Chicago Underground Quartet). Those horns are staples of big bands too, so you'll hear plenty in the music from Sweden's Maluba ...

The feature artist is Los Angeles trumpeter Daniel Rosenboom who stokes the fires of outrage and concern for current politics and society on his new Absurd in the Anthropocene. There are plenty of new releases from European artists: Deep Ford, the very ambitious trio of keyboardist Benoit Delbecq, saxophonist Robin Fincker and drummer Sylvain Darrifourcq, Phronesis ...

Jazz em Agosto 2019

Read "Jazz em Agosto 2019" reviewed by Stefano Merighi

MUSICIAN Born:

Dan Rosenboom

In a time marked by unpredictability and absurd realities, music imbued with spontaneity and improvisation seems especially relevant. Internationally recognized trumpet player and composer-producer-entrepreneur Dan Rosenboom embraces the chaos and seeks to endow us with hope and joy along the way. Rosenboom, a musician at the forefront of Los Angeles' ever-thriving creative music scene, boasts an international reputation for boundary-pushing projects and relentless productivity. A trumpet virtuoso equally at home in improvised and classical music, the prolific musician has been featured on stages and festivals all over the world, and has been described as “a phenomenon” by the Los Angeles Times. The highly decorated Rosenboom was born on May 7, 1982 in Berkeley, CA to a composer-performer father who was a trailblazer of early computer music and a mother who was an avant-garde vocalist, designer, and visual artist

Evil Genius: Experiments on Human Subjects

Read "Experiments on Human Subjects" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

It would be an uplifting experience to see this trio go at it in a live setting. For those who need comparisons, think of a cross-pollination between some of John Zorn-produced kinetic avant-garde jazz fusion, psych and rock ensembles along with Frank Zappa influences, and punk jazz groups. Guitarist Max Kutner is the lead ...

Vinny Golia Sextet: Trajectory

Read "Trajectory" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Walking in the canyons of a big city like New York or in the old-growth forests of California Redwoods, it is almost impossible to acquire perspective. One cannot stand back far enough to take in the enormity of the scene. It is best to embrace the hugeness and enjoy the experience. The same can be said ...

Quoan - Brian Walsh, Sam Minaie, Daniel Rosenboom & Mark Ferber: Fine Dining

Read "Fine Dining" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

According to the press release this bi-coastal USA ultra-progressive band is inspired by the classic chord-less quartets of modern jazz via a fast-moving program, complete with tricky, mind-bending works, odd-metered unison excursions and other revved up implementations. The musicians' assertiveness is embedded into various offshoots and stylizations such as hard-hitting bop and poignant call / response ...

Burning Ghosts: Reclamation

Read "Reclamation" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Reclamation is Burning Ghosts second album and first for John Zorn's Tzadik label. Based in Los Angeles, the band's fire and brimstone-like overtures are seated in doom metal-jazz along with renegade fuzoid bop movements. The musicians dole out sheets of torrential soundwaves via fluently enacted unison runs and booming cadenzas that spark a tidal wave of ...

Dr. Mint: Voices in the Void

Read "Voices in the Void" reviewed by Glenn Astarita

Dr. Mint includes prominent affiliates of the West Coast progressive jazz and improvisational scenes, Daniel Rosenboom (trumpet), Gavin Templeton (saxophones) and Alexander Noice (electric guitar) with like-minded East Coast members, Sam Minaie (bass) and Caleb Dolister (drums). Here, the quartet presents a wow factor on its fifth release. No doubt, they're armed and dangerous via these ...

All About Jazz needs your support

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
