Tony Bennett and Janis Joplin 2: Tony and Janis 2 Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama

by Dan McClenaghan
It was twenty years ago today (or more accurately, twenty years prior to the studio date for this recording) that the Ensenada, Baja California-based Loma Alta Life Extension foundation cloned Joplin Joplin, using the detritus obtained from one of the singer's hair brushes to bring a genetically identical replica to life. The Second Janis puts to ...
Pino Palladino and Blake Mills: Notes with Attachments

by Chris May
Do not be put off by the cover. It might suggest inaccessible, up itself, bone-dry cerebralism, but the reality is contrariwise. Around a third of the music is vaguely reminiscent, in spirit if not in execution, of the 1949-1950 Birth Of The Cool sessions conducted by Miles Davis with arrangers Gil Evans, John Lewis, Gerry Mulligan ...

U2: All That You Can't Leave Behind 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (2CD)

by Doug Collette
The music of U2 on All That You Can't Leave Behind is very much in keeping with the austere black and white graphics, preserved throughout the graphic design of this digipak as well as its enclosed twenty-four page booklet within. A distinct move away from the density of production experimentation on their three previous studio albumsAchtung ...
Jon Hassell: Words with the Shaman

by Chris May
Jon Hassell is best known as the creator of Fourth World music, an acoustic-electronic blend of jazz, minimalism, drone, ambient, traditional African and Asian instruments and harmolodic signatures. Hassell has defined Fourth World as serious music with transcultural appeal and a smile." He unveiled the concept on his debut album, Vernal Equinox (Lovely Records), in 1977. ...

Daniel Lanois

Born:
"I want to leave something behind that means something," Daniel Lanois told Rolling Stone' s James Henke, explaining his singular approach to life and record making. "Am I going to follow my own ideas and philosophies, or am I just going to fall in the rut of doing rubbish for the sake of making a living?" Lanois's decision to follow a more meaningful approach led him from recording groups in a homemade studio in the 1970s to forging a partnership with avant-garde producer Brian Eno in the early 1980s to producing some of the best-known—even legendary—acts in popular music, including U2, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, the Neville Brothers, and Bob Dylan.
Jon Hassell / Farafina: Flash Of The Spirit

by Chris May
The trumpeter and keyboard player Jon Hassell is often labelled a practitioner of ambient music. This is a misconstruction resulting mainly from Hassell's encounters with Brian Eno, who is widely perceived as ambient's originator. Hassell's oeuvre, a technologically enabled fusion of western and non-western musics which he calls Fourth World, is a wholly different kettle of ...
Allison Au Quartet: Wander Wonder

by Dan McClenaghan
Toronto-based, Juno Award-winning alto saxophonist Allison Au and her quartet present their follow-up to 2017's Forest Grove (Self Produced) with Wander Wonder. The set of all Au originals--with keyboardist Todd Pentney co-writing Force Majeur"--opens with a translucent dreamscape, The Valley," that sounds like something that Daniel Lanois might have cooked up. The quartet follows up this ...
