Corey Mwamba

Born:
Born and based in Derby, Corey Mwamba's commitment to jazz and improvised music in Britain and Ireland drives all aspects of his work, whether through composition, playing, or promoting new music. Corey predominantly plays vibraphone; he also plays dulcimer and uses audio processing software. He is recognised as a highly creative improviser and composer working across a wide range of jazz and contemporary music. Mwamba's distinctive approach and tone is instantly recognisable in any context: a potent blend of pure sound, highly melodic phrases and ethereal textures; barely whispered chords and ear-piercing robotic screams

Yana: baby/people

by Duncan Heining
The trio Yana has, apparently, been together for more than a decade but this is their first CD release, other recordings being available on Bandcamp. Corey Mwamba is one of the most interesting and exciting vibraphonists currently working in jazz and improvised music. One might, with justification, call him a musical scientist whose concern is with ...

A Madman’s Approach To Music And Why Can't Music Be Like A Tree?

by Duncan Heining
"Art alone makes life possible." --Joseph Beuys. The Glasgow Improvisers' Orchestra is unique. It's an over-used word, I know, but in this case fully justified. GIO are unique in so many ways--in the way they formed, the way they make decisions, in their make-up, how they work and most importantly how they sound. They ...
Nat Birchall: Live In Larissa

by Phil Barnes
This limited double vinyl and download collection is a wonderful document of two nights that Birchall and his band played at the Duende Jazz Bar in Larissa during May 2013. Bruce Lindsay's Best Releases Of 2013

by Bruce Lindsay
As 2013 drew to a close the Jazz Police appeared to be resurgent, at least in the UK--busily condemning those foolish enough to make and/or enjoy popular music and entertainment rather than listen to the latest cutting-edge ensemble from somewhere or other. Thankfully, the musicians just got on with it. In at least ten cases, they ...
Martin Archer: Blue Meat, Black Diesel & Engine Room Favourites

by Glenn Astarita
One never knows what direction British multi-reedman Martin Archer will impart as he surges forward in a stealthy world of avant-jazz, electronics, or discombobulated jazz-rock. Hands down, he's one of the more creative musical souls on mother earth. Each new album marks a distinct journey. His fresh outlook and cornucopia of disparate concepts, executed with large ...
