Tony Kofi: Point Blank
by Chris May
British saxophonist Tony Kofi has made a specialism of heritage projects. Among the best of them is the Monk Liberation Front, a band which Kofi co-founded with pianist Jonathan Gee in 2003 and which performs Thelonious Monk's music. The work of Julian Cannonball Adderley is the focus of another venture. An early spin-off from the Front ...
Chet Baker: Live In London Volume II
by Roger Farbey
Somewhat incredibly, these sessions from 1983 were recorded on a domestic audio cassette recorder. The John Horler Trio was employed to back Chet Baker on his six consecutive nights at The Canteen in London, a short-lived jazz venue in the heart of the City. Jim Richardson, bassist on these dates, gained Baker's permission to record these ...

by Victor L. Schermer
Michelle Lordi Trio Friday Nights Philadelphia Museum of Art June 8, 2018 I've always appreciated Michelle Lordi's singing through her fine recordings, but I'd never heard her in person, so I seized this opportunity to hop over to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to catch her show, ...
Hans Teuber & Jeff Johnson: Deuce
by Paul Rauch
Bassist Jeff Johnson and multi-reedist Hans Teuber have a musical and personal friendship that goes back to the late eighties when both first arrived in the northwest outpost that is the city of Seattle. The jazz scene in the Pacific Northwest has always been prolific, though to many, a hidden gem outside of the main pulse ...
Zach Brock: La Nuova Stagione Del Violino Jazz
by Angelo Leonardi
Jazz Ambassadors: Representing A Segregated America During The Cold War
by Victor L. Schermer
Jazz Ambassadors THIRTEEN Productions 2018 Here, long overdue, is a comprehensive documentary about the legendary jazz musicians in the 1950s who served as “cultural ambassadors" under the aegis of the U.S. State Department, touring Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Soviet Union. The film comes sixty years after the fact. As Americans continue ...
Mike Clark & Delbert Bump: Retro Report
by Kevin Press
Go ahead. Judge this album by its cover. That 1970-something Ford grill tells you everything you need to know. It's big, funky and stamped Made In USA. These 11 cuts are Hammond-organ groovy. Which is to say Delbert Bump groovy. And the only thing better than a Bump groove is one paired with former ...

This album brings together New York-based pianist Roberta Piket with two outstanding musicians from the Los Angeles area: bassist Darek Oleszkiewicz and drummer Joe La Barbera. Hence the title “Roberta Piket: West Coast Trio." To spice things up, Piket brought along her long-time cohort Billy Mintz on percussion on one track, and special guest guitarist Larry ...
