Fred Katz

Born: March 25, 1919

Fred Katz (born February 25, 1919) is an American composer, songwriter, conductor, cellist, and professor. Katz was classically trained at the cello and piano and began his career in a number of classical and swing orchestras. In the early 1950s, Katz accompanied singers such as Lena Horne, Tony Bennett and Frankie Laine. From 1955 through 1958, he was a member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet. He also recorded several solo albums for Pacific Jazz, Warner Bros., and Decca Records. At Decca, he also served as A&R director. In the late 1950s and 1960s, Katz scored a number of films for Roger Corman, including A Bucket of Blood and The Little Shop of Horrors

Jeff Song

Born: December 22, 1963

Musician and composer Jeff Song is becoming well known for his contributions to the world of contemporary improvised music and to the growing body of creative music by Asian Americans. Originally from the Midwest, Song has been active in the jazz, folk, rock, funk, new music, and contemporary improvisation scenes in the Boston and New York areas since 1982. Primarily a cellist and bass guitarist, he has also performed and recorded on the kayagum, a Korean 12-string zither. Outside of the traditional Korean aesthetic, Song has developed his own unique style, approach, and technique on this zither as another means for his creative music making.

Adam Fisher

Cellist Erik Friedlander is a composer and an improviser, afirst-callstudio player and a jazzbo. A veteran of NYC's downtownscene, his 12CDs as a leader recently include, Block Ice & Propane, hissolo celloreinterpretation of American roots music; The Broken ArmTrio, a triotribute to jazz bassist Oscar Pettiford; and Volac, aromanticcollection of virtuoso solo cello pieces by John Zorn. Erikhasperformed on 100's of recordings and soundtracks includingwork withLaurie Anderson, The Mountain Goats, Ennio Morricone, andCourtneyLove.

Friedlander started studying music at an early age,beginning at age 5with folk guitar and then, at age 8, cello lessons. He grewup in ahouse filled with music as his father, an avid music lover,madecountless mix tapes. Erik's desire to actively participatein theswirl of music styles he grew accustom to hearing led him tofind newways to play the cello. His compositions and his improvisingstyleattempt to blend the traditions of classical and popularmusic styleswith an always evolving vision of what a cellist can bepushed toaccomplish.

Laurie Haines Reese

Born: December 3, 1961

Laurie is dedicated to creating new music that features the cello. Improvisation is an important part of music, a part that allows each individual a chance to speak the music that is in their heart. An accomplished classical musician, Laurie loves the variety in performing jazz, folk and improvisatory music. From Lancaster, PA, Laurie has free-lanced & concertized extensively on the east coast, in Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle, Hawaii, New York & Europe. Currently the cellist for several ensembles, ranging from classical to jazz to celtic music. She earned a Master of Music Performance degree from the University of Southern California

Gil Selinger

Born: March 26, 1972

Cellist, Composer, SoundPainting Conductor, Improviser. All are words which describe Gil Selinger, a musician at the forefront of 21st century music making. As a cellist, Gil's background is in Classical, Jazz, and Free Improvisation. All of which he has merged into a style called "Classical Improvisation". As a soloist Gil has appeared with the Brooklyn Philharmonic playing "Chant Du Menestral" by Alexander Glazunov, and he has recored together with the Modern Chamber Orchestra the Haydn Cello Concerto in C major, both as written and as an improvised composition together with SoundPainting Conductor Walter Thompson

Greg Heffernan

Born: July 25, 1983

Greg "Cosmo D" Heffernan is a versatile cellist whose musical passions have led him to work in improvisation, jazz and electronic music. Greg is currently based out of New York City and works as a freelancer, bandleader and touring musician. Greg has recorded several albums with his band, Sauce, and one of his compositions for the band made its Carnegie Hall debut in early 2008. Under the "Cosmo D" alias, Greg performs, alone or with others, combining his use of live laptop manipulation with cello improvisation. In 2003 and 2004, Greg was part of the Banff Centre's Jazz Program, under the artistic direction of Dave Douglas

Alex Kelly

Born: 1972

After earning three bachelors degrees and two masters degrees in music, Alex Kelly completed a doctorate in cello performance with a secondary area in composition from the University of Oregon. Alex has performed and composed for a variety of ensembles throughout the United States and Canada for the past fifteen years. He is known for his performances with Joan Jeanrenaud, the Dresher Ensemble, the CKW Trio, the Lizz Roman Dance Company, the Wichita Symphony, the Eugene Symphony, the Oregon Mozart Players, Hundredth Monkey, the Knotty Ensemble, the New Pickle Family Circus, Circo Zero, El Radio Fantastique, CKW Trio, the Cooke Quintet, and Pamela Z. Alex’s versatility is demonstrated in a variety of styles, which range Renaissance to Romantic, from avant-garde to rock

Dana Leong

Born: March 4, 1980

Described as crafting "lines of sublime lyric content" (Chicago Tribune), and "sizzling, highly stylized solos" (Philadelphia Inquirer), Dana Leong started his impressive career with the rare skill of commanding both the cello and trombone. He has held roles as both a performer and composer with top artists including: the 2006 Grammy-nominated jazz chamber trio led by Paquito D'Rivera (where he fills a chair frequented by Yo-Yo Ma); the 2007 Grammy-nominated Dafnis Prieto Absolute Quintet; and has worked with Ray Charles, Diddy, Kanye West, Wynton Marsalis, Yoko Ono, and more. Following his successful debut release Leaving New York (featuring Grammy Award winners Christian McBride and Paquito D'Rivera), Dana recently completed his latest recording Anthems of Life. As bandleader/composer, Dana heads The Dana Leong Band featuring Dana (cello/trombone/laptop), Aviv Cohen (drums), Jason Lindner (keyboards), and MC Baba Israel (rap vocals)
