Bright Dog Red

Bright Dog Red (BDR), the alt-jazz ensemble that consistently “defies easy categorization” (Downbeat), celebrates 10 years of existence with the release of Never Would We. The album marks the group’s tenth release since forming in 2015 and eighth since signing with Ropeadope in 2018.

Never Would We epitomizes BDR’s “all-encompassing approach to modern-day jazz” (Blue in Green Radio, UK). That approach has evolved over the course of a decade, but “remains committed to blending a potpourri of styles” with “gripping narratives of sociopolitical struggle” and “proudly unanchored improvisation” (Downbeat).

Congratulations to saxophonist / composer / innovator Henry Threadgill & his Zooid band on their 25th anniversary, well-celebrated with the releases of Cut You Where You Was. This is one of Zooid's best. Props also to the tied-at-the-improvisational--hip duo, pianist Matthew Shipp & bassist William Parker for the re-release of Zo, on vinyl for the first ...

Two previously unreleased recordings by two of the seminal artists in creative music get sampled this time out: Albert Ayler's Revelations—The Complete ORTF 1970 Fondation Maeght Recordings and Charles Mingus' The Lost Album From Ronnie Scott's. For Ayler, this was his last recorded music before he died later that year. The tapes for the Mingus release ...

I missed the original release by Fred Anderson and Hamid Drake of their From The River To The Ocean in 2007, but I'm catching up to this brilliant piece of work. The recording has been made available again on bandcamp.com. It's one of the features of this episode, as is O Life, O Light Vol. 1 ...

Read "Top Ten Tracks from 2019 to help You Get Through The Day" reviewed by Nick Davies

As 2019 passes into 2020 it is a time to look back at some of the best records from the previous year. 2019 saw some very good jazz releases many of which were featured on the Crazeology Radio Show and it was really hard to decide a top ten. After many hours of deliberating with records ...
