Basic Beauty: Arthur Blythe on Columbia
by Jakob Baekgaard
Back in 2016, BGO Records started reissuing the complete works of alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe (1940-2017) on Columbia. The first volume containing Lenox Avenue Breakdown (1979), In the Tradition (1980), Illusions and Blythe Spirit (1981) has already been reviewed on AAJ. The following two volumes complete the project of putting an important body of work from ...

by Angelo Leonardi

Howard Johnson and Gravity: Testimony
by Angelo Leonardi
Arthur Blythe, 1940-2017: A Remembrance
by Todd S. Jenkins
The emotive power of Arthur Blythe's bracing alto saxophone tone and flighty phrasing set him apart from many of his generation. A poet, a muezzin, an angry activist, a lamenting lover: Blythe conjured a broad array of sonic images through his nonpareil approach to music. The beloved altoist, who had battled Parkinson's disease for the past ...
Dave Burrell, Bob Stewart: The Crave
by Alberto Bazzurro
Concepito in forma di LP, con un lato A ("The Crave," “Popolo Paniolo," “I Am His Brother," “Pua Mae 'Ole") e un lato B ("New Orleans Blues," “Spanish Swat"), questo curioso album, risalente addirittura al 1994 (13 giugno, live a Colonia), affianca due musicisti all'epoca ben più di oggi attivi sulla scena del jazz--diciamo così--post-free in ...
Daniel Herskedal: The Roc
by Roger Farbey
The Roc is Norwegian tuba player Daniel Herskedal's follow-up album to his 2015 recording for Edition Records, Slow Eastbound Train which like its predecessor again features Eydolf Dale on piano and Helge Andreas Norbakken on percussion. However, that record also benefitted from the massive Trondheim Soloists chamber string orchestra. A pastoral beginning with “The ...
Howard Johnson and Gravity: Testimony
by Roger Farbey
Howard Johnson really should need no introduction. He's played with many of the greats including Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, Hank Crawford, Jack De Johnette and Gil Evans (his solo on “Voodoo Child" was a highlight of Evans's Jimi Hendrix tribute album). He also appeared on Carla Bley's seminal 1971 album Escalator Over The Hill. Throughout his ...
Howard Johnson and Gravity: Testimony
by Jack Bowers
Those who see the tuba as a sluggish, unwieldy instrument capable only of rounding out a musical composition in the lower register may have to rethink that appraisal after listening to Testimony, in which multi-instrumentalist and tuba master Howard Johnson ushers no less than half a dozen tubas and rhythm through their paces in a session ...
Le Rex: Wild Man / Ingrid Laubrock: Ubatuba
by Stefano Merighi
