Jazztopia is a mythical island of passion, swing and joie de vivre, South Atlantic, close to the Guanabara Bay, somewhere over the rainbow... Do you remember Thomas Morus’ 1516 book inspired by the tales of discoveries along the Brazilian coastline by Amerigo Vespucci?

History

Jazztopia is also a combo which originated in 2006 as the house band of "Jazz at the Maze" - Rio's most unusual jazz night, hosted by British-Indian artist, film-maker, polymath and singer Bob Nadkarni at The Maze Inn.

Walter Baco

Baco is an artist, active in several art movements. Living in Vienna, he works as a pianist, composer, author, creator of radio dramas, director and conducts a dance theatre company (Carousel Theater). He creates timeless art for savourers, beyond all fashions and styles. Baco has been composing since the age of five - yet hardly using music paper, he simply improvises. He gains inspiration out of every moment, living in and from the flow. During live-performances he often combines several art movements to one holistic experience. Besides commissional compositions for TV, film and stage he also realises cooperations with companies, the media, communities and institutions and is engaged in social and peace activities. Several times Baco has already been working as Artist in Residence and is invited to play concerts and guest performances on various official occasions.The artist has written several books and has released audio books as well as music CDs.

Paul Tafoya is a talented trumpeter, composer, and bandleader with a decade of professional experience in the music industry. He developed a passion for music in his pre-teen years, later being awarded "Marine Musician of The Year" in the MARFORPAC band in the Marine Corps, where he honed his skills while travelling abroad performing. After his time in the military, Paul attended college and studied with some of the most renowned musicians in the industry, including Lew Soloff, Jeremy Pelt, Ralph Alessi, Ingrid Jensen, Jon-Erik Kellso, and more.

Between 2007 and 2009 Jamie was Course Leader for Jazz at Leeds Conservatoire (then Leeds College of Music), where he remains a Principal Lecturer on the jazz faculty. He has worked with leading jazz musicians like Baptiste Herbin, Sheryl Bailey, John Stowell, Roni Ben-Hur, John Goldsby, Wayne Escoffery, Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen, Sebastiaan DeKrom, Andrea DiBiase, Steve Watts, Matt Fishwick, Steve Fishwick, Richard Iles, Steve Brown, Pete Whittaker, Gary Potter, Tom Harrison, David Lyttle, Laura Jurd, and Tori Freestone. In the field of popular music he has contributed to projects involving Mercury Music Prize nominee Richard Hawley, CANDID recording artist Sarah Mitchell, and Leeds-based indie band "The Pigeon Detectives"
