Musician

Robert Stone

With the release of, Live Times Five / Quinteto Yo, Canadian-born composer and multi-instrumentalist Robert Stone consolidates a solo recording career long in the making. Stone, who lives in southern Spain, was born in Toronto on New Years Eve 1950. He is convinced that jazz was playing in the background. He began learning to play the guitar as a youngster, and soon also took up the bass and piano. As early as the final years of high school, he was earning a part-time living in weekend dance bands, and by backing local folksingers. He paid his way through college this way, and then, through much of the 1970s, drifted into a life of touring north-eastern North America as a bass player in anonymous rock and jazz bands. There were highlights, of course, including tours with the revered Canadian folksinger, the late Stan Rogers, the American anti-war icon, Jerry Jeff Walker, and in put-together backing bands for occasional notables, like Chicago blues singers, regional pop stars, and once, the legendary Stan Getz

About Ben Wolfe

Musician

Ben Wolfe

Born:

Bassist-composer, Ben Wolfe, has recently released his new CD, “No Strangers Here” on MAXJAZZ. As Wynton Marsalis said, “Ben Wolfe swings with authority.” And as can be heard from Ben’s original compositions on this, his fifth and newest CD, Ben also innovates and “scores” with authority. Downbeat Magazine says, “ He hews to the esthetic of group interplay and the rhythm’s of bebop, and displays a well-honed sense of sonic narrative.” In January 2008, The New York Sun reviewed Ben’s new composition, “From Here I See,” created for the Harlem in the Himalayas series at the Rubin Museum, as a piece “Bernstein would doubtlessly have approved of.” Like many of Ben’s compositions, this 25-minute Suite fell into line with the jazz concept of a double quartet " a format that combines the standard jazz quartet with the standard string quartet. Ben Wolfe’s work is a true ensemble " expressed in the group sound, rather than dominated by extended solo compositions
