Spin Cycle: Spin Cycle III

Read "Spin Cycle III" reviewed by Mark Corroto

The quartet we know as Spin Cycle delivers III, the band's follow up to Assorted Colors (Sound Footing Records, 2018). Here, the compositional partners Scott Neumann and Tom Christensen exercise their omnivorous tastes on a broad --ranging spectrum of sound. Like their previous two albums, the pair employ guitarist Pete McCann and bassist Phil Palombi, two über sidemen to accomplish their insatiable need to explore multiple genres and eras. There is something here for everyone. The opening track ...

Spin Cycle (Tom Christensen & Scott Neumann): Spin Cycle III

Read "Spin Cycle III" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Spin Cycle III, by the group Spin Cycle, co-led by drummer Scott Neumann and saxophonist Tom Christensen, opens in a high octane mode, via Neuman's sizzling drums, Pete McCann's stinging guitar and Phil Palombi's muscular, juiced-up bass laying down a precision foundation, with the crisp articulation of Christensen's tenor sax out front. The tune is “Churn," written by the saxophonist, and it has a fine focus of a hot fusion romp. “Drain The Swamp," another composition from Christensen, ...

Sarah Jane Cion: Summer Night

Read "Summer Night" reviewed by Greg Henry Waters

It takes a lifetime to become a real artist. Mozart, with all his talent, didn't write any mature music until he was twenty-five years old. What a task to take on and Sarah Jane Cion has done just that, with all the pain and non-glory that goes with being an artist. Cion is a pianist who meets this standard and is no copycat.Cion has recruited a group of emotional and sensitive musicians for Summer Nights, and they enrich ...

Sarah Jane Cion: Summer Night

Read "Summer Night" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

Ms. Cion's follow up to Moon Song will not disappoint; she is a major dynamo in a quiet and lyrical sort of way.

Sarah Jane Cion, the jazz pianist-composer, has a beautiful consistency about her. For her follow up to last year's well-received Moon Song, she has chosen another nocturnal title, Summer Night. Her compositions on both recordings allude to nature in all its manifestations. “The Pond Beneath the Moon," “Moon Song," and “Suncycle" from Moon Song parallel well with ...

Phil Palombi: 80 East

Read "80 East" reviewed by Mark Corroto

In an interview recorded as an afterthought to American Classic, a 1982 Dexter Gordon session, the then sixty-one year old tenor saxophonist was asked about the future of jazz. He replied, “Bebop is the music of the future.” His return to the US from a self imposed exile not only signaled the resurgence of bebop but opened the door for a very young Wynton Marsalis to carry it’s banner. As succeeding generations answer the call, Dexter’s memory and his cause ...

Sarah Jane Cion: Moon Song

Read "Moon Song" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

A New Face on Jazz. Sarah Jane Cion, the conservatory-trained (the New England Conservatory) phenomenon, was awarded First Place in the 1999 Great American Jazz Piano Competition in Jacksonville Florida. From there she found her way into the arms of Naxos Jazz, which has now has produced her first recording as a leader, Moon Song. She is a well-schooled musician (teaching at Tufts) without being academic. Cion has previously recorded with Marian McPartland, Mike Stern, Antonio Hart and Herve Jeanne. ...
