As a composer and musician, Michael Bates "serves up melodic modernism and contrapuntal elegance" ("Time Out, New York") and his influences range from Shostakovich, Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman to Bad Brains, Wayne Shorter and Joni Mitchell. Known as a both a leader and double bassist in several collectives, he has performed with Quinsin Nachoff, Russ Johnson, Michael Blake, Gerald Cleaver, Dan Weiss, Tyshawn Sorey, Greg Osby, Jeff Davis, Peter Van Huffel, Scott Dubois, Ohad Talmor, Michael Attias, Mike Murley, Shane Endsley, Michael Sarin, Reuben Radding and several others. His debut CD Outside Sources was called one of the best albums of 2004 by Cadence Magazine editor Bob Rusch

Born in Nachod, Czech republic. Robert Balzar began playing the acoustic bass at age eleven. Robert studied classical bass at Brno Conservatory- bass, piano. In 1985, he continued his career in Prague as a studio musician (TV Big Band) and a jazz artist.
In 1996 he establish group under his own name - Robert Balzar Trio.
As a performer, he has played with John Abercrombie, Benny Golson, Tony Lakatos, Victor Lewis, Hal Galper,  Raul Midon...
In the year 1990 Robert had begun working with the legendary Czech chanson singer Hana Hegerova.
Since 1998 began his association with funk group J.A.R.
Since 2000 Robert establish and play as a part of the Dan Barta’s - Illustratosphere, along with Filip Jelinek on keyboard, Stanislav Macha on piano, Jiri Slavicek on drums and Jaroslav Friedl on guitar.
In 1996, Robert Balzar formed a group under his own name - the Robert Balzar Trio
and 1998 recorded their first CD called TRAVELLING (Jazzpoint),
In 2000, The Robert Balzar Trio recorded their second CD titled ALONE (Cube),
In 2005, Robert Balzar Trio recorded OVERNIGHT (Sony/BMG),

John Gray (21) is a bassist and composer who is currently studying at Manhattan School of Music in New York City. John started playing bass with school jazz bands in the Phoenix area at age 10. Eventually, with the Thunderbird High School Jazz Band, John traveled around the country, playing in California, Las Vegas, and in New York, at the IAJE Conference in 2004. He was also a member of the Young Sounds of Arizona, which gave him the opportunity to play with James Moody, Wayne Bergeron, Chris Brubeck, and Bobby Shew. While in high school, John also began to compose. He wrote several pieces for various small groups, including one piece that was showcased at the NAU Jazz Festival. John decided to attend the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, where he has continued to compose

Spencer Murphy (b. Syracuse, NY) is a bassist, producer, composer, and consultant living in New York, NY.

After graduating from SUNY Purchase in 2010, he led a weekly performance at Smalls Jazz Club for several years; regular members of his quintet included Tivon Pennicott, Stacy Dillard, John Chin, and Lawrence Leathers, and guests included Melissa Aldana, Will Delisfort, Joel Frahm, Eden Ladin, Kenneth Salters, Josh Davis, and Dayna Stephens.

Murphy has collaborated with Nick Hakim, Helado Negro, Gabriel Garzon-Montano, Bartees Strange, Morgan James, and IGBO, among others. His work with Onyx Collective has spanned 5 albums and over a hundred performances, at unlikely venues including The Whitney (Jason Moran's "Jazz on a High Floor in the Afternoon"), The Guggenheim (Agathe Snow's "Stamina"), Raymond Pettibon Studio, and pop-up spaces all over downtown NYC. As a result of his longtime association with Thomas Bartlett and Reservoir Studios, he has had the opportunity to work with Oren Bloedow, Jennifer Charles, Julia Stone, Henry Jamison, and Oh Land. In October of 2021, he premiered a work for poetry and music entitled "GRASS," featuring Bartlett, Taja Cheek, Oren Bloedow, and Craig Weinrib. The same month, he originated the bass chair in Only an Octave Apart, starring Justin Vivian Bond and Anthony Roth Costanzo, with arrangements by Nico Muhly and music supervision from Bartlett. In January of 2022, alongside Bond and Roth Costanzo, he performed selections from Only an Octave Apart with The New York Philharmonic as part of their "Authentic Selves" Series. In March of 2023, he performed with Marc Anthony Thompson, Zsela Thompson, and the Scorchio Quartet at Carnegie Hall for the annual Tibet House Benefit, curated by Philip Glass.

Tom Abbs

Multi-instrumentalist and filmmaker Tom Abbs has been performing and recording in a variety of contexts (classical, rock, jazz, and improvised musics) since age eleven. Tom started his musical training at the age of seven playing piano. A couple of years later he changed his instrument to cello and by the time he was eleven he was playing the bass. He was handed a tuba in seventh grade and his conquest of the "low end" began. Tom went on in his teens to win accolades in state and national competitions for his work as a soloist and ensemble player. He came to New York in 1991 to attend the New School’s Jazz and Contemporary Music program where he studied with such masters as Reggie Workman, Buster Williams, Joe Chambers, Brian Smith, Junior Mance, Arnie lawrence, Chico Hamilton and Arthur Taylor

While in college, he worked his way into the Columbus, OH jazz scene. Upon graduation, he quickly rose to a prominent position as one of the top freelance jazz bassists in the Midwest. Born in Milwaukee in 1983, Bryan was raised in a house with a drum set and an extensive record collection from his parents. He started playing piano at the age of eight, guitar and string bass at eleven, and cornet and electric bass at twelve. Absorbing the records he heard at home, Bryan fell in love with the music of the Beatles, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Earth Wind and Fire, The O’Jays, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, The Who, Led Zeppelin, George Duke, Stevie Wonder, Stanley Clarke, and Sly. It wasn’t until high school when he heard Jaco on Weather Report’s “Night Passage” that he decided the bass was the instrument for him
