Morty Corb

Born: April 10, 1917

Morty Corb, a jazz bassist who performed with Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Pearl Bailey and Nat King Cole, among others. Born in San Antonio, Corb learned to play the ukulele at age 6 and later, without training, mastered the guitar and bass. He began performing professionally at 17 with a San Antonio dance band and later played with bands in Arkansas and Missouri. After appearing with a band in the Army Air Forces, he moved to Los Angeles in 1946 and soon joined Louis Armstrong's All-Stars band. He also recorded with Claude Thornhill, Jess Stacy and Kid Ory and later performed with Jack Teagarden and Bob Crosby

Wilber Morris

Wilber Morris was an American jazz double bass player and bandleader. He was the brother of the cornetist, composer, and conductor Butch Morris. Wilber Morris recorded widely, and performed with such musicians as Pharoah Sanders, Sonny Simmons, Alan Silva, Joe McPhee, Horace Tapscott, Butch Morris, Arthur Blythe, Charles Gayle, William Parker, and Billy Bang, Charles Tyler, Dennis Charles, Roy Campbell, Avram Fefer, Alfred 23 Harth, Borah Bergman and Rashied Ali.

Ron Matthewson

Born: February 19, 1944

Ron Matthewson is orignally from Scotland. He is best known for his work with The RONNIE SCOTT GROUP. The rythmn section of this band recorded under the name of THE CDM TRIO, the personnel being John Critchinson, Keyboards, Ron Matthewson, Double Bass, and Martin Drew on Drums. Ron Matthewson was also on bass with the well known group PAZ. Regretably, Ron has not played for sometime now, due to ill health, but he still remains one of the finest virtuoso bass players Britain has ever produced!

Kent Kessler

Born: January 28, 1957

Jazz bassist Kent Kessler is best known for his part in numerous Chicago bands, usually in line-ups with reedsman Ken Vandermark. He first began appearing on recordings in the early '90s as a member of Hal Russell's NRG Ensemble. The band continued after Russell's death in 1992 with the addition of clarinetist and saxophonist Ken Vandermark. Kessler and Vandermark went on to play together in a number of bands that have revitalized Chicago's jazz scene, putting it back on the map of current avant-garde and free jazz. Paul Chambers

Born: April 22, 1935

One of the premier bassists in jazz history, Paul Chambers had it all: a beautiful tone, a fluid technique, a great choice of notes, impeccable time and a magnificent sense of swing. He could even take a bowed solo and keep it interesting and in tune. Paul Chambers was born in Pittsburgh in 1935, and grew up in Detroit, where he became part of the city's growing jazz scene. He moved to New York, where he played in the {{J.J. Johnson = 8101}}-{{Kai Winding = 11467}} quintet. He joined Miles Davis' first legendary quintet along with {{John Coltrane = 5851}}, {{"Philly" Joe Jones = 8188}}, and {{Red Garland = 6951}}, at the age of 20

Alison Rayner

Born: September 7, 1952

Alison Rayner is an award winning bassist and composer from the UK.

The 2019 recipient of an Ivor Novello Composer Award and runner-up ‘Double Bass’ player in the British Jazz Awards for both 2018 and 2019, Rayner has had an extensive career playing jazz and other contemporary styles since the mid-70s, recording and touring internationally with critically acclaimed Latin/jazz group The Guest Stars throughout the 80s.

Performing regularly throughout the UK and Europe, she leads ARQ, her contemporary jazz quintet, described as ‘a beautifully integrated band’ **** by Dave Gelly in the Observer. ARQ’s third ARQ album ‘Short Stories’ was released to critical acclaim late 2019, receiving extensive airplay and reaching #1 in the Amazon Jazz Chart. ARQ won ‘Ensemble of the Year’ in the prestigious 2018 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and were shortlisted in the ‘Small Group’ category of the 2018 British Jazz Awards.

Kenny Davis

Born: September 4, 1961

Kenny is a native of Chicago, Illinois. Kenny's career began with listening to such great R&B artists such as: Earth Wind & Fire, Brothers Johnson and The Temptations, just to name a few. First being self taught, he then studied music theory with David Holder Sr. He then went on to Northeastern Illinois University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. Upon entering Northeastern University, he discovered jazz music and he quickly became part of the Chicago jazz scene, playing with Von Freedman, Ari Brown and Fred Anderson. Later, he went on to study classical bass with Warren Benfield of the Davis was the bassist of The Tonight Show Band from September, 1999 thru March, 2002

Essiet Essiet

Born: September 1, 1956

Considered one of the top bassists in jazz today, Essiet Essiet first received critical acclaim over a decade ago in Bobby Watson's group Horizon. Born in Nebraska to Nigerian parents, he began studying violin at age10 and switched to bass viol at 14. As a child, he traveled widely with his family and that early exposure to many cultures, folk- ways, languages, and religions fostered his world view of strength through diversity.  Some musicians are purists, says Essiet, but I like to mix styles. Essiet was Art Blakey's last bassist, playing with him for 2 years and on 3 CDs. He's also performed with Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton, Benny Golson, and the Blue Note All-Stars, to name a few

Gary Crosby

Gary Crosby OBE is a leading jazz double bassist, music arranger and educator in the UK. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Tomorrow’s Warriors. A founder member of the original Jazz Warriors, Gary Crosby is a professional musician and bandleader, composer/arranger, record producer, company director and facilitator. He leads Gary Crosby’s Nu Troop, Gary Crosby Trio, Guava, Jazz Jamaica and Jazz Jamaica All Stars – and has worked with many top international artists. Gary is the nephew of guitarist Ernest Ranglin, who performed with Jazz Jamaica at Ronnie Scott’s in October 2009 as part of the club’s anniversary concert series.
