Vezhlivy Otkaz

Active since:

“Vezhlivy Otkaz, which means “polite refusal” in English, is one of the most original and erratic rock bands in Russia. It was formed in 1985 with a then-popular reggae/ska blend. Since then, they have gone through numerous stylistic changes, flirting with everything from free jazz to Russian folk. Their sound, however, has always been unique and immediately recognizable. Roman Suslov’s rhythmic guitar work and unusual high-pitched vocals gives VO’s music a precisely constructed, crystal-clear sound that is completely devoid of any of the extra noise so typical of rock-n-roll. The sound is so well organized that sounds almost academic.” Artemy Troitsky @ “Moscow Times”) “Some imprints of various music styles from Prokofiev to tango nuevo and Soviet songs might be found in the music of Geese and Swans

De Beren Gieren

Active since:

Better than anyone else, De Beren Gieren know how to blend an avant-garde sound with melodious pieces and references to the great classical composers of the 20th century. They effortlessly shift from more rigidly styled compositions to improvised sections and thus reveal the pulsating and ominous futuristic sound of a new world. More so than in previous albums, on “Dug Out Skyscrapers” (Sdban) harmonies and compelling grooves interact and disclose the future of the past... the album’s ‘Leitmotif’. Like dedicated archaeologists from the future, De Beren Gieren use subtle electronic effects to uncover the potential of their acoustic instruments layer by layer

Kids Eat Crayons

When Montréal's Kids Eat Crayons first appeared in 2007, they were described as "Frank Zappa meets John Zorn" (Montreal Gazette), and "The Dillinger Escape Plan meets Sun Ra" (Jean Belanger, Bionic) with "that Mike Patton- esque flavour of dementia" (Montreal Mirror). Prog Montreal called them "highly original" and Impact Campus said "the musicians are equally virtuosos and visionaries" with "compositions written by the hand of a master." Montreal Mirror went on to name their debut, "Kids Eat Crayons is for Lovers," as one of the top albums of 2008. "Dogs at Play Among the Ruins" is the new album, and it kicks shit up a notch

Sons of Kemet

Over the last half decade, Shabaka Hutchings has established himself as a central figure in the London jazz scene, which is enjoying its greatest creative renaissance since the breakthroughs of Joe Harriott and Evan Parker in the 1960s. Hutchings has a restlessly creative and refreshingly open-minded spirit, playing in a variety of groups—most notably, Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming, and Shabaka & the Ancestors—and embracing influences from the sounds of London’s diverse club culture, including house, grime, jungle, and dub. “The common theme in my career as a jazz musician has been wondering if what I’m doing is the thing that I should be doing,” says Hutchings, who studied classical clarinet at college at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music & Drama
