New Breed Brass Band

New Breed Brass Band lives and breathes the culture of New Orleans, infusing funk, rock, jazz, and hip-hop into a custom-made enhancement of second-line brass band tradition. “That’s what we came up under,” says snare-drummer Jenard Andrews of second line bands like the ReBirth, Dirty Dozen and Lil’ Rascals Brass Bands. “Now we’re trying to take that sound and bring in some new stuff and expand it. We bring outside influences like Earth Wind & Fire and Brass Construction, trying to interpret a different song for every genre, and make it all our own sound.” With a founding core of five New Orleans natives, New Breed Brass Band made its street debut as a nine-man unit in November 2013 at the Nine Times Second Line

Forq

Forq is an instrumental quartet with a dynamic sound and a penchant for sonic exploration. The group is composed of world-class improvisers, but it is their unusually memorable, genre-blending songs that leave the most lasting impression. Seven of these songs make up their third album Thrēq (pronounced “threek”), which was released in late 2017. Originally founded by keyboardist Henry Hey (David Bowie, Empire of the Sun, Jeff "Tain" Watts) and bassist Michael League (Grammy-winning leader of Snarky Puppy), Forq is now joined by guitarist Chris McQueen (Snarky Puppy, Bokanté), drummer Jason "JT" Thomas (Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor, Marcus Miller, Snarky Puppy) and bassist Kevin Scott (Wayne Krantz, Jimmy Herring, Col

The Chemistry Project

What’s in a name? In the case of The Chemistry Project …the name speaks to the ability of five talented musicians to create innovative, unique, and heartfelt music at will!! The Chemistry Project is a rebirth of the early to late 90’s group who experienced a great deal of success gigging at venues in the Baltimore / Washington area including 8X10, Maxx’s on Broadway, Virginia Tech, and Georgetown Harbourfest. Additional prestigious bookings include the Kennedy Center. Reformed in 2015 with two founding members, today’s Chemistry Project continues the tradition of playing smooth and funky soulful jazz with an emphasis on amazing textural harmonies and melodies

Bokanté

John Lennon told us, "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans." And while Snarky Puppy leader Michael League was in Montreal making other plans—he heard the voice of local resident Malika Tirolien who’d ended up in Canada following a circuitous journey from the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. A chance exchange between the two kindred spirits led to League writing some music and melodies specifically for her which he sent to Tirolien with lyrical concepts attached. Tirolien then wrote lyrics and melodies, demoing and ping-ponging the new content back to Michael who was on the road with other bands until they had created an album's worth of songs. Singing in both Creole and French, Tirolien’s words draw nuanced pictures of the struggles we face in our world today—racism, the refugee crisis, a dying planet, apathy towards human suffering—and offer words of thankfulness for those things which unify us, as well as hope for the future of our race. League kept tinkering with his little experiment by trading his bass in for a baritone guitar and set out to build a band from scratch

The Suffers

The Suffers are Houston's award-winning 8-piece ensemble that have redefined the sound of Gulf Coast Soul. Established in 2011, The Suffers’ lineup was curated by bassist Adam Castaneda and vocalist/keyboardist Pat Kelly, who brought on trumpet player Jon Durbin, trombonist Michael Razo, guitarist Kevin Bernier, percussionist Jose "Chapy" Luna, and drummer/vocalist Nick Zamora filled out the rhythm section, while frontwoman Kam Franklin topped off the group with soaring vocals. The last 2 years have brought the band to new heights, as they played 300+ shows across North America, visited NPR in Washington, DC for a Tiny Desk Concert, made their national television debut on Late Show With David Letterman, and officially released their much anticipated self-titled album followed by performances on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Jimmy Kimmel Live. This year they will embark on their first international tour and spread the sweet sound of Gulf Coast Soul across the Caribbean, Western Europe, and Australia

Orion Tango

A tango is all about moving smoothly as one with your partner. Orion Tango's tango is all about doing the same thing between minds and instruments. The newest project from Philadelphia's genre-defying 1k Recordings label consists of guitarist Tim Motzer, bassist Barry Meehan and drummer Jeremy Carlstedt: a team of premier musicians who've played together in various settings in the past, but never in this trio configuration before. Their self-titled debut shows both the familiarity of longtime collaborators and the eagerness of a fresh outfit just discovering what it can do. Drawing on the experimental spirit of Krautrock as much as the deep rhythmic stew of urban dub, offering infectious power- rock grooves and occasional noise on the edge of chaos, Orion Tango is a thick slice of heavy power-trio improv as this crew does it best

Bright Dog Red

Bright Dog Red (BDR), the alt-jazz, genre-fluid ensemble from Albany, New York, recently released two albums simultaneously, Bad Magic and Hegemonitized. The double release marks the ensemble’s sixth and seventh albums since signing with Ropeadope in 2018.
Despite being hailed as the “best kept secret in the avant-jazz underground” (JazzTimes). BDR continues to produce music with a fervent prolificacy. The ensemble’s "proudly unanchored improvisation" (Downbeat) has been widely lauded for “blending a potpourri of styles, while presenting a sonic personality and conceptual direction…propelled by gripping narratives of sociopolitical struggle” (Downbeat).
