Troy Collins' Best Releases of 2012
by Troy Collins
Considering the quantity of recordings released in a year's time, attempting to compile an end of the year list mentioning every first-rate session would be difficult at best. The ten titles included below are among the most exceptional new jazz albums I've heard in 2012. Jason Robinson Tiresian Symmetry Cuneiform Records
Joe Morris / William Parker / Gerald Cleaver: Altitude
by John Sharpe
Guitarist Joe Morris is on a roll. Hardly a month goes by without a new release featuring the Boston-based musician. Of course, he doubled his chances by adding acoustic bass to his armory alongside his six-stringed axe. It's the latter he wields on this trio date featuring bassist William Parker and drummer Gerald Cleaver, captured at ...
David S. Ware / Planetary Unknown: Live at Jazzfestival Saalfelden 2011
by John Sharpe
For its second release, cooperative super group Planetary Unknown offers three collectively birthed cuts recorded live at the Austrian Saalfelden Jazz Festival in 2011. Even though given equal billing, saxophonist David S. Ware gets the biggest font size metaphorically in the concert introduction and features most prominently in the mix. In fact, it is Ware who ...
Joe Morris/ William Parker/ Gerald Cleaver: Altitude
by Mark Corroto
Of all the possible combinations and permutations of modern improvising jazzmen, it's a wonder that the trio of guitarist Joe Morris, bassist William Parker and drummer Gerald Cleaver have never worked together as a unit. Luckily in 2011, at the urging of label chief Steven Joerg, the trio got together for two sets at The Stone ...

Book of Mæ'bul (Another Kind of Sunrise) is the third release from Darius Jones to document his impressive musical growth as a bandleader. Beyond his salient contributions to groups such as Little Women, Mike Pride's From Bacteria to Boys and Tanakh, Jones' 2009 AUM Fidelity debut, Man'ish Boy (A Raw & Beautiful Thing), established the young ...
Darius Jones Quartet: Book Of Mae'bul (Another Kind of Sunrise)
by John Sharpe
Saxophonist Darius Jones has rung the changes on each of his widely acclaimed leadership dates. Book Of Mae'bul subverts expectations again with an all new quartet drawn from NYC's finest, who shift between intricate script and flowing invention in the blink of an eye. Together they navigate eight of Jones' compositions, which tend towards order rather ...
Eri Yamamoto Trio: The Next Page
by John Sharpe
It is arguable whether a bar is the right venue for jazz in the 21st century. On any given night most of the punters are there for a chat with friends over drinks, maybe to pick someone up, and just perhaps to appreciate the music. For the last decade, Japanese pianist Eri Yamamoto and her trio ...
