Amalie Dahl's Dafnie: Live at Kafé Hærverk

by Daniel Mège
September 25, 2026

There is a strange relationship between alto saxophone and marine biology. Akira Sakata, the breathtaking yet unsung altoist of torrential intensity and a marine biology researcher, specialized in daphnia (dafnie in Scandinavian languages), those tiny, endearing-looking crustaceans, as early as 1969; Amalie Dahl made them her orchestra. She knew nothing of this weighty legacy.

Moldejazz 2026

by Daniel Mège
August 4, 2026

Located at 62°7 North, Moldejazz (the Molde International Jazz Festival) is the ideal place for a festival in week 29, in early summer. A floral scent drifts through The Town of Roses, a ribbon less than a kilometer wide wedged into a peninsula between fjord and mountains. Even once it has set, the sun is never far ...

Dörner-Schwerdt-Sartorius: Jul Fuel

by Mark Corroto
February 3, 2025

Jul Fuel unfolds more like a tale of three cities than a singular statement--especially when the tracks are experienced in album order. The release transitions from a solo piano performance to a piano-drum duet, a trio performance, and, finally, a slide trumpet solo. At its core, however, Jul Fuel revolves around German improviser Axel Dörner, even ...

Simon Nabatov 3 + 2: Verbs

by John Sharpe
February 20, 2024

What constitutes a composition? German-based Russian-born pianist Simon Nabatov makes a convincing case that a simple verbal instruction can suffice on Verbs.
