Marc Johnson - Eliane Elias: Swept Away
Dopo la sua partecipazione in Shades of Jade (ECM) del contrabbassista e compagno di vita Marc Johnson, Swept Away rappresenta il debutto da leader per l'etichetta di Manfred Eicher. Al suo fianco un gruppo di stelle che comprende oltre allo stesso Johnson, Joey Baron e Joe Lovano (ospite in alcuni brani).
L'ottimo lavoro in studio di musicisti e tecnico del suono fanno di Swept Away un disco perfetto nel suo genere. Alcuni brani sono dei piccoli capolavori. Tra questi It's Time, dedicato a Michael Brecker, un blues lento che Lovano arricchisce con un assolo mozzafiato - sottile, lirico, profondo, emozionalmente coinvolgente. Da segnalare anche Midnight Blue, la strepitosa ballad Moments, l'orientaleggiante One Thousand and One Nights e B Is for Butterfly che arriva al momento giusto nella scaletta del disco, creando un'aura di romanticismo urbano da tarda nottata, con il quale rilassarsi per affrontare le fatiche del giorno dopo. Grande l'assolo di Marc Johnson.
L'album si chiude in bellezza con un brano della tradizione folk americana, eseguito da solo dal contrabbassista.
