Surface to Air Trio: Surface to Air

Il newyorchese Surface to Air Trio si muove lungo un crinale di esplicita matrice etnica (certamente prevalente rispetto a quella jazzistica, per capirci), che trae linfa palpabile dallo strumentario impiegato, del resto rispecchiante una precisa scelta di campo, e che in questo album trova espressione compiuta quanto evidente. Fino alle estreme conseguenze: a fronte infatti di un'eleganza di tratto—e di un'evocatività, anche—indiscutibile, si respira nel lavoro un'aria un po' troppo estetizzante, manierata, nonché alla lunga piuttosto ripetitiva (per climi e situazioni globali) e improntata a un descrittivismo un po' sovrabbondante.

L'ascolto procede in maniera assolutamente piacevole, ogni cosa è sempre al suo posto e il senso della forma viene rispettato fin nei minimi dettagli, per carità, ma proprio questa "bella calligrafia" (a scapito di una sana vena inventiva espressa magari anche con le sue imperfezioni) è ciò che lascia più interdetti, in un prodotto alla fin fine sin troppo edulcorato, un po' carente sul piano emotivo, quasi amorfo, per così dire "limbico".

Ciò non toglie che—per gli stessi motivi, letti però da una prospettiva inversa—questo Surface to Air (titolo quanto mai emblematico, viene da dire) non possa risultare meno che ammirevole, in particolare in brani quali "Odalisque," un po' più animato degli altri, e—per contrasto—il quasi incorporeo (ma sufficientemente ispirato) "The Sleep in Your Eyes".
