Steve Swell, Matthew Shipp: Space Cube Jazz
Turgori peraltro sempre calibrati fuoriescono dalla campana del trombone, così come il pianoforte si mette in riga sotto di esso (in senso ovviamente metaforico, perché di fatto il regista di tutta l'operazione è lui, Matthew Shipp, anche proprio per un fatto di palinsesto, quasi fisiologico). E a Steve Swell non deve sembrar vero di poter agire sopra fondali tanto solidi, rigorosamente tesi alla forma fuoriuscente dal totale, con momenti (quelli squisitamente pianistici, intendiamo) in cui tutto torna e si riassume unicamente nel percuotere —a volte sfiorare—quegli ottantotto tasti un po' bianchi e un po' neri.
Accade così che un disco per forza di cose prevedibilmente piuttosto monolitico sotto il profilo timbrico sappia vincere la sfida grazie a quello dinamico, nella solidità— nonché nella totale complementarietà—dei (presunti) duellanti. Che si sfidano a loro volta, ma senza alcun vezzo da prime donne, senza voler prevalere l'uno sull'altro (tanto le differenze, ovviamente non qualitative, sono talmente evidenti...), ma uno di fianco all'altro. Come in una franca chiacchierata fra amici.
