Sophie Milman: Sophie Milman
Sophie Milman has a big voice that she uses to express the full range of emotions that drive jazz standards. She swings confidently and casually, setting things at ease through her powerful delivery. She reaches down deep for the kind of feelings that provide a memorable experience.

Milman's voice has a clear and open tonal quality that she applies liberally with enthusiasm. She interprets lyrics effectively and brings a high level of musicianship to the forum. In a few spots on the program, however, her quick vibrato proves distracting. Consequently, she's at her best with songs where she can turn it loose. "My Baby Just Cares for Me and "Dark Eyes, for example find Milman driving her message home forcefully with great success. You can't miss a beat. The lighter pop song "Back Home to Me, on the other hand, doesn't work out quite as well. Her program varies from Broadway to traditional and modern, offering different views of her easy-to-like vocal style.

The program includes stellar support from band and soloists who help to make Milman's session a delightful experience. Those who provide particularly welcome soloing include alto saxophonist Pat LaBarbera, pianist Bill King, guitarist Rob Pilch, violinist Lenny Soloman, harmonica player Guido Basso, and the horn section on "My Heart Belongs to Daddy, which features Phil Dwyer, Steve McDade and William Carn.
