Track review of "Robin’s Nest/Bonology"

Kim Nazarian: Some Morning
Vocalist and New York Voices' founding member Kim Nazarian joins her band mate Lauren Kinhan in recently releasing a solo recording. Kinhan's Circle in a Square.(Self Produced, 2014) was well received, bringing much deserved attention to both Kinhan and the NYVs. Nazarian's entry into the solo field enriches the soprano field greatly and accents her discography with the NYVs. The present Some Morning features the likes of Paquito D'Rivera, Gary Burton, and John Pizzarelli, but it is the presence of trombonist/producer/husband Jay Ashby that seals the musical deal on the recording.

Nazarian opens the release with a medley of Illinois Jacquet's "Robbin's Nest" coupled with JJ Johnson's "Boneology." The piece swings with a Big Band momentum that is gentle but assertive. Nazarian's delivery is relaxed and piquant. Ashby turns in a Tommy Dorsey solo following pianist Mark Soskin's solo stroll through the song's interior that is of a wartime vintage. Nazarian has matchless scat chops that enable her to bend the will of any song to her own. She makes it all look (and sound easy) on Some Morning.

Personnel

Kim Nazarian: vocals; Jay Ashby: trombone; Sean Jones: trumpet; Roger Humphries: drums; Mark Soskin: piano; Dwayne Dolphin: bass; Steve Hawk trumpet.
