Storia strana, e interessante, quella di Claude Marc Bourget, pianista canadese nato nel 1956. All'inizio degli anni '80 sembra avviato ad una promettente carriera musicale. Nel 1985 sceglie però di percorrere un'altra strada, quella della letteratura, ed abbandona l'attività concertistica. Un auto-esilio durato fino al 2006, ai cinquant'anni. Tappa fondamentale nella vita di ogni uomo, e che per Bourget ha segnato il ritorno alla musica.

Una musica, la sua, che mescola con disinvoltura jazz e radici classiche. "Tra il jazz, nato verso il 1910, e i vari Debussy, Stravinsky, Satie, Hindemith, che negli stessi anni davano una nuova Europa musicale, ci sono più affinità che differenze". Una musica nella quale si percepisce un forte elemento letterario, un'idea di racconto. E diciamo questo assicurandovi che non si tratta di suggestione - questa sì che sarebbe letteraria - dovuta alla biografia del pianista.

Second Time, realizzato in perfetta solitudine su uno Steinway gran coda (suono magnifico!), si sviluppa infatti come un lungo racconto, come una lunga suite. Preceduta da un cappello introduttivo, la prima parte si muove lungo le coordinate "consuete" del piano solo in chiave jazz. Gli inevitabili echi jarrettiani, dunque. Ma assai più forte, in Bourget, è l'impronta del conterraneo Paul Bley. L'amore per la risoluzione inattesa, per il cambio d'umore che, nello spazio di una nota, ci porta da un gioioso maggiore ad una malinconia più intima.

Con lo scorrere delle tracce si insinuano qua e là, fino a diventare predominanti, gli echi classici. Non solo dal punto di vista compositivo (Brahms e Beethoven, cuore della seconda parte), ma anche da quello esecutivo. La mano sinistra, spesso trascurata dai pianisti jazz, svolge qui un lavoro enorme diventando a tratti la vera protagonista.

Nella terza parte la suite cresce di intensità ed in "Ungrund" raggiunge il suo culmine. Le atmosfere si placano poi dolcemente, il fiume in piena disperde la sua forza in mille rivoli, nella musica si insinuano elementi romantici. La Coda è delicatissima, l'Adagio conclusivo rimanda per atmosfere alla marcia funebre di Chopin.
