Jerome Sydenham & Kerri Chandler: Saturday
Chandler and Sydenham’s impeccable musical taste is given full reign on this classy collection of organic house tracks. African rhythms, live percussion, acoustic arrangements and deep grooves melt together in a way only Ibadan seems to inspire. At only nine tracks, the average length is somewhere around seven minutes making each one a musical mini-saga in its own right. Indulging the prolific talents of the producers, each track unfolds in a cascade of sound, color and rhythm. An extensive live horn section adds depth to the afro-jazz of "Aro" while Congoloese vocalist Alain Nkosi Konda adds his urgent vocals to "Ko Ko." "Deconstructed House (Phase 1)" is one of the standout tracks; acoustic guitars underpin the uplifting vibe as Jania’s vocals float above all. Other songs follow similar suit with live instrumentation providing the focal melodic points, creating a warm, organic atmosphere. An expansive and original take on deep house, Saturday is a smooth, masterful collection, that will elicit repeated listening and induce a pleasant state of euphoria.
