Ralph Alessi Quintet, Shipp/Parker Duo & Barefoot Records

Click the play button to listen

Great to see trumpeter Ralph Alessi back leading his quintet, and it has a twist to it. He's replaced the sound of Ravi Coltrane's saxophone with the trombone, as played by his brother Joseph Alessi. It gives A Sun That Never Sets a different sound plus this album marks the first time the two Alessi brothers have ever recorded together. I'll wager you've not heard the standard tune, "Summertime," sliced and diced the way pianist Matthew Shipp & bassist William Parker do on this preview of the upcoming re—release of Shipp's Zo." There's an extra "release" of energy on Satoko Fujii's second release of five big bands, Satoko Fujii's Orchestra Kobe, and there's nuclear fission happening on another track from Pat Thomas' The Day After. We delve into current and past releases from Copenhagen's Barefoot Records, and fill the final 30 minutes with trumpet gymnastics from Ambrose Akinmusire, Tomasz Dabrowski in Ocean Fanfare, more Ralph Alessi, and Jacob Wick in the closer by Tres Hongos.
