Sean Ali: Quartets For Plucked Strings
ByThough the music stands fully on its own, a glimpse into its origins adds texture to the experience. Living in a one-room apartment in New York and preparing to welcome his first child, Ali sought refuge in nearby parks, taking along his guitarhis first instrumentand a mandolin to practice and compose. The surrounding world of new life, impending change and shifting routine subtly permeates the album.
The opening track, "Amniotic Dreams," unfolds in gentle, glowing tones. The plucked strings resonate as though emerging from a twilight space liminal and hushed. Gradually, the piece gains energy and movement, as Ali weaves in a field recording of birdsong, a sonic suggestion of life beyond the protective veil of the womb. The music evokes a moment on the threshold between the interior and exterior, the imagined and the real.
"Sessile" shifts the mood toward something more tactile and mechanical. Here, the mandolins and guitar produce a percussive, metallic shimmer, evoking a hybrid of the mbira and music box. The repetition and subtly shifting textures give it a mesmerizing, clockwork qualityboth hypnotic and grounding.
On "Waiting," Ali blends the natural and the composed with an uncanny grace. The track begins with ambient birdsong and evolves into a lattice of layered plucked strings, as if the instruments themselves are mimicking the calls of their feathered counterparts. The piece carries a cinematic elegance and would not be out of place in an Ennio Morricone score, conjuring imagery of wide-open spaces and internal contemplation.
The closing track, "Childhood," opens in a burst of lyrical melody. It's as if a child has just run outside into the sunlight, full of exuberance and wonder. The piece is bright and expansive, with moments of awe scattered throughoutalmost as if one can see the child pause to marvel at the clouds drifting by. It is a fitting conclusion to an album that explores the many textures of anticipation, presence and the unfolding of life.
With Quartets for Plucked Strings, Sean Ali expands his musical vocabulary while preserving his deep sense of introspection, crafting a tender, intimate suite that resonates with personal transformation and quiet joy.
