Soo Cho Quartet: Prayer

Giovane pianista sudcoreana dalla formazione eclettica, Soo Cho si è trasferita in Olanda nel 2001 e lì ha perfezionato le sue capacità jazzistiche e ha suonato con i principali musicisti del paese, da Ben Sluijs a Eric Vloemians fino ad Angelo Verploegen, che la accompagna qui nel suo esordio discografico.

Prayer è un buon disco di jazz moderno, con alcuni momenti di qualità - come nel caso della title track, d’ispirazione vagamente hadeniana - ed altri più ordinari, dove sia compositivamente che esecutivamente la pianista appare ancora un po’ timida.

Protagonista del lavoro è alla fine il trombettista Angelo Verploegen, molto tradizionale nell’impostazione, ma al tempo stesso espressivo e lirico. Soo Cho si prende alcuni spazi per mostrare una buona qualità timbrica e una naturale tendenza ad astrarre e ad allargare gli spazi - in “Prayer” ben evidente - che la avvicina alla recente tradizione “bianca” del pianismo jazz, ma che in questa occasione non conduce alle sue conseguenze più compiute.

Tutto sommato, un buon esordio, del quale attendiamo un seguito più coraggioso.
