Tony Renold Quartet: Places

La musica del quartetto del batterista Tony Renold vuole essere dichiaratamente descrittiva dei luoghi, dei colori e dei paesaggi alla maniera di Cezanne, prendendo come modello di riferimento la semplice bellezza dei laghi (immaginiamo in particolare quelli svizzeri immersi nei paesaggi alpini) che vengono visti, citando Thoreau, come 'occhi della terra nei quali chi guarda ha la possibilità di misurare la profondità della propria natura.'

Di sicuro l'approccio strumentale del quartetto svizzero è piuttosto variegato e non ci sono remore ad allontanarsi dalle convenzioni jazzistiche, che rimangono comunque predominanti.

Il cantante Silvan Jeger aggiunge la sua voce ben profumata di torba in tre brani. La chitarra di Michael Bucher è efficace e scintillante di piccole asprezze che nel contesto piuttosto rotondo non sfigurano affatto. La tromba di Michael Gassmann sa essere lirica quanto basta per dare un senso cinematografico che sicuramente non dispiace al batterista leader Tony Renold, molto flessibile e capace di variare a piacere la scansione di base.
